DRDO developed uncooled thermal imagers based Driver Night Sight for tanks has
a range of up to 150 meters with the field of view 45°x34° degree.
Driver’s night sight will assist the driver in tank
operations at dark pitch nights with no ambient light and will be replacing
existing image intensifier sights used in T-90 tanks. Tank driver should be
able to clearly view the area in front with adequate depth perception while
driving over undulating terrain with the help of a Driver Night Sight.
Night blindness of the Indian Army’s armoured formations was
a major issue till 2016 with only 50% having the capability to fight at night,
since then most of the T-72 and T-90 tanks have been equipped with Driver Night
Sight that was manufactured by Bharat Electronics Limited, Vijaywada, and OFB
Dehradun, making MKU, the first Private sector company to receive Transfer of
Technology for the DRDO developed Driver Night Sight.

firing trials.
There have also been delays in supply of field artillery guns
by China and the production of main battle tanks have been temporarily halted
as investigations are on to determine the reason for the faults. In an attempt
to increase its artillery firepower, the Pakistani Army received at least eight
of the heavy 203mm towed guns from NORINCO that were tested at its ranges
earlier this month.
The guns faced several issues during firing trials, which
included faults in the rammer assembly and breech lock. Similarly, problems
have also been discovered in the VT 4 main battle tanks imported from China.

the Himalayan frontier. The high altitude operating, vertical take-off and
landing drone, driven by eight propellers, will have the ability to be launched
from altitudes of up to 15,000 feet and the capacity to airlift up to 50 kilograms
of cargo over a distance of 10 kilometer.
Artificial intelligence based target tracking and accurate
launching and landing, geo fence for operating within a defined geographical
area, fully autonomous and semi autonomous flight modes, GPS, real time video
telemeter and a failsafe system that enables the UAV to return to base in case
of loss of radio link, low battery, etc, are other required features for the
flying machine.
Cargo drones are being looked at as being force multipliers,
according to DRDO scientists. Besides enabling faster and continuous supply to
troops deployed at high altitude areas and difficult to reach locations, they
can be used for reconnaissance and mapping. In times ahead, they can also be

Tata Advanced Systems will be participating in the World
Defense Show to be held in Riyad, Saudi Arabia from 6 to 9th March onwards
where it will be showcasing its Wheeled Armoured Platform (WhAP) 8x8 Amphibious

WhAP 8x8 recently completed all Internal Army user Trials
successfully, Tata & Army are working out mega orders for which they plan
to use the common platform for various intended roles like Wheeled APC, 30mm
Infantry Combat Vehicle, 105mm Light Tank, command post vehicle, ambulance,
special purpose platform, 120mm mortar carrier, CBRN Vehicle.
Tata’s Micro Bullet Proof Vehicle (MPBV) is equipped with
bullet resistant panels for protection, firing ports, and compact dimensions with
4 wheel assisted turning for easy movement during combat. MPBV is already in
use with Force One, Para Battalions, NSG, and marine commandos.
Why Navy is dragging its fleet on developing Indigenous SSK?
DRDO proposed a conventional attack submarine SSK design but
the proposal was rejected by the Directorate of Naval Design. This seems to be
the second rejection of the indigenous conventional attack submarine first
being two designs of Super Kalvari class with and without air independent
propulsion technology embedded.

a South Korean offer of KSS-III submarine design with Indian specific

Turkey Pakistan join hands to develop TF-X fighter after
Project AZM Flops
Turkish Aerospace Industries has announced that it will be
tieing up with Pakistan Air Force owned Pakistan Aeronautical Complex to
develop National Combat Aircraft, also called TF-X, a planned fifth generation
fighter aircraft that will replace American made F-16 fighter jets in both
countries from 2030 onwards. The prototype of the TF-X fighter will be unveiled
in 2023, and aims to have its maiden flight in 2026.
PAF that tried to develop fifth generation fighter aircraft
locally under Project AZM since 2017 has been struggling to go past the study
and concept stages to full fledged preliminary design review due to lack of
aeronautical experience in the country in the development of locally built
fighter jets, which now will make way for TF-X fighter. Pakistan role in the
development of the TF-X fighter program are yet to be revealed but it is
unlikely it will have any major workshare in the program.
Plan to buy 30 Predator drones put on hold
India has put its plan to acquire 30 Predator armed drones
from the US on the back burner, on account of its focus on indigenous
development and manufacturing, as well as the prohibitive cost involved. Although
the Narendra Modi government on February 9 banned the import of drones,
acquisition of unmanned aerial vehicles for defence and security purposes are
exempt, but still require special and specific clearances. As of now, the
Predator deal is off.
The decision to put the acquisition on hold was taken as
India already has some capability in armed drones, it is currently upgrading
the Israeli Heron drones. DRDO is expected to unveil its medium altitude long
endurance, MALE drone latest by March, the country’s national security planners
are looking at futuristic high altitude pseudo satellite, HAPS technology for
surveillance and targeting capability.

Manufacturing Facility Likely In Gujarat
India’s first private sector aircraft manufacturing facility
and its associated industrial ecosystem are likely to be located at the Dholera
Special Investment Region in Gujarat. Dholera is being developed as a prominent
node on the Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor, about 100 kilometer south west of
Ahmedabad.
Airbus is to manufacture 40 C-295 MW military transport in
India in partnership with an Indian consortium led by Tata Advanced Systems
Limited under a $2.8 Billion contract signed with India’s Ministry of Defence
in September 2021. This will be the first full spectrum ‘Make in India’
aerospace programme in the private sector involving development of a complete
industrial ecosystem from manufacture to assembly, test and qualification to
delivery and maintenance over the complete life cycle of the aircraft.
A concurrent offset contract obligates, Airbus Defence &
Space to source equipment and systems worth 30 percent of the value of the C-295
MW contract from Indian partners. The manufacturing facilities of the Indian
offsets partners are also likely to be co located at Dholera.

Bharat Dynamics Expecting big orders for Akash and Astra
missiles
Bharat Dynamics company has won a new order of around Rs
3,100 crore from the Indian army and with this their total order book stands at
Rs 11,400 crore. CMD of Bharat Dynamics said, their present order book is
around Rs 11,400 crore. Their two major products, one is Akash weapon system
and other is Astra Missiles, last year they have started manufacturing air to
air missile Astra also.
Bharat Dynamics is expecting big order from Indian Defence
Forces. For both Akash and Astra, Bharat Dynamics are at an advanced stage.
More than Rs 10,000 crore order are expected plus few refurbishment orders from
defence forces, Bharat Dynamics is looking at a stronger order book of around
Rs 25,000 crore in next two to three years.
The Indian Navy’s wait for six conventional diesel electric
submarines under the project name P-75I, is likely get extended, pushing the
acquisition plans forward by almost a year. The Rs 43,000 project is part of
the 30 year submarine building plan of the government that began in 1999.
The latest delay in Project 75(India) is due to the stringent
deadline put forth in the request for proposal issued by the Ministry of
Defence in July 2021. The government had shortlisted five foreign submarine
makers who were to partner with either one of the two Indian submarine makers
to produce the vessels locally. The government had to push back the bid
submission date from November 2021 to June 2022 after the majority of foreign
participating companies found it difficult to meet the first deadline.
Field evaluation trials of the submarines were expected to
begin in mid April 2022 if the bids come in November itself. Further delay is
expected to happen, as the government is yet to issue approvals to
participating foreign companies. Now the revised schedule for bid submission is
at the end of June 2022. Government approvals for the respective countries have
still not been fully processed and it is still susceptible to some more delays
by a couple of months.

Sri Lanka in talks to acquire Indian military aircraft as
island faces food, oil and medicine shortages
Sri Lanka is in talks with India to discuss a proposal to
acquire two military aircraft for the Sri Lankan Airforce, following a meeting
last week between foreign minister GL Peiris and the Indian minister for
external affairs, S Jaishankar.
The proposal is centred around acquiring two Dornier aircraft.
The Dornier is a twin engine, multi-purpose aircraft used for maritime
surveillance by the Indian Navy and Coast guard. The aircraft is considered the
showpiece of the governments “Make in India” programme and is manufactured by
Hindustan Aeronautics under licence from the Swiss company. It is unclear how
the aircraft will be used by the Sri Lankan military.
Peiris commenting on the meeting said, There is a proposal
for the purchase of two Dornier aircraft. There is no finality, nothing has been
agreed upon. There are proposals and counter proposals, and it is one of the
matters under discussion.

Indian Navy celebrates its 36th anniversary of its commissioning into the force
on Monday. Built by Mazagaon Dock Limited, the ship was commissioned into the navy
on February 21, 1986.
INS Tir is also the senior ship of the First Training
Squadron. Over the course of 36 years of its service, the ship has travelled
more than 6,00,000 Nautical miles, visiting over 25 countries, enhancing
India’s maritime diplomacy and foreign cooperation initiatives. It also played
a crucial role in exposing the officer cadets to the navy’s strategy towards
shaping a favourable and positive maritime environment.
The ship has rendered tremendous service in training of
future officers of the Indian aand friendly foreign nations with more than 4000
officer trainees passing out from its hallowed portals over these years.
Haryana potential hub of professional pilot training, says
governor
Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya on Saturday stressed the
need for setting up more state-of-the-art pilot training centres in the state
to cater to fast expanding aviation sector. Haryana has a huge potential to
emerge as a hub of professional pilot training in the country.
Hisar is being developed as an integrated aviation hub, said
Dattatreya. Possibilities should also be explored to develop state of the art pilot
training facilities in public private partnership mode as well, he said.
The governor said that encouragement in the art of flying
among youths can enable them to avail opportunities in the domestic and
international aviation sector. India is set to be one of the biggest aviation
hubs in the world.
Confusion over AMCA vs MRFA for Indian Airforce
Air Chief Marshal Chaudhari recently said that in MRFA, most
of the contenders have the 4.5 generation technology, But MRFA winner even if selected by 2023 will take another 2 to
3 years before contract can be executed and will require 4 to 5 years before
the local production line is set up and Transfer of technology takes place for
rollout of the first Made in India Jet. IAF will not get the first jet out of
MRFA Tender at least not before 2028.
If IAF believes that AMCA Mk1 that will be classified as a
5th generation fighter jet will be superior to any MRFA jet that will come out
in 2028 then why procure such an inferior jet for a price that will be
significant as expensive as a 5th generation fighter just doesn’t make any
sense.
IAF plans to procure just 5 Squadrons of AMCA MK2 and 2
Squadrons of AMCA Mk1 but is ready to procure 7 Squadrons of MRFA jet for a
price range that after local production might be in the range of $100-130
million per unit when it can expand production of AMCA Mk1, place orders for 5
Squadrons and let AMCA Mk2 a 5.5 generation jet that takes over production line
in 2035 for another 5 Squadrons, and then plans for 5 more Squadrons of AMCA
Mk3 with 6th generation capabilities so that it can start replacing older
Sukhoi thirties from 2040 onwards.
