DRDO’s young scientists to develop new cargo drones for Himalayan frontier
Young scientists at DRDO have been tasked to design and develop a new class of load carrying unmanned aerial vehicle that is capable of operating from high altitude bases for undertaking logistic operations along the Himalayan frontier. The high altitude operating, vertical take-off and landing drone, driven by eight propellers, will have the ability to be launched from altitudes of up to 15,000 feet and the capacity to airlift up to 50 kilograms of cargo over a distance of 10 kilometer.
Artificial intelligence based target tracking and accurate
launching and landing, geo fence for operating within a defined geographical
area, fully autonomous and semi autonomous flight modes, GPS, real time video
telemeter and a failsafe system that enables the UAV to return to base in case
of loss of radio link, low battery, etc, are other required features for the
flying machine.
Cargo drones are being looked at as being force multipliers,
according to DRDO scientists. Besides enabling faster and continuous supply to
troops deployed at high altitude areas and difficult to reach locations, they
can be used for reconnaissance and mapping. In times ahead, they can also be
modified for combat operations. Urgent supplies of essential items such as rations,
water, fuel, ammunition and medicines to forward posts in remote areas at
present depends on helicopters, which is a costly affair, or ferried by porters
and mules, which is time consuming.

Tata to showcase WhAP at Saudi Arabia
Tata Advanced Systems will be participating in the World
Defense Show to be held in Riyad, Saudi Arabia from 6 to 9th March onwards
where it will be showcasing its Wheeled Armoured Platform (WhAP) 8x8 Amphibious
Wheeled Armoured Vehicle along with Micro Bullet Proof Vehicle (MPBV).
WhAP 8x8 recently completed all Internal Army user Trials
successfully, Tata & Army are working out mega orders for which they plan
to use the common platform for various intended roles like Wheeled APC, 30mm
Infantry Combat Vehicle, 105mm Light Tank, command post vehicle, ambulance,
special purpose platform, 120mm mortar carrier, CBRN Vehicle.
Tata’s Micro Bullet Proof Vehicle (MPBV) is equipped with
bullet resistant panels for protection, firing ports, and compact dimensions with
4 wheel assisted turning for easy movement during combat. MPBV is already in
use with Force One, Para Battalions, NSG, and marine commandos.
Why Navy is dragging its fleet on developing Indigenous SSK?
DRDO proposed a conventional attack submarine SSK design but
the proposal was rejected by the Directorate of Naval Design. This seems to be
the second rejection of the indigenous conventional attack submarine first
being two designs of Super Kalvari class with and without air independent
propulsion technology embedded.
Project-75I is heading to a single vendor situation with only
a South Korean offer of KSS-III submarine design with Indian specific
requirements seems to be a clear winner KSS-III batch-2 will have 3,600 tons
(surface displacement) and will be capable of carrying 10 submarine launched ballistic
missiles.
A country that can develop nuclear submarines that have
manufactured six French Kalvari class submarines locally can also work with
local partners to develop enhanced Super Kalvari class submarines that can meet
most of the requirements of same class as KSS-III submarines, that we might procure
from South Korea.
Turkey Pakistan join hands to develop TF-X fighter after
Project AZM Flops
Turkish Aerospace Industries has announced that it will be
tieing up with Pakistan Air Force owned Pakistan Aeronautical Complex to
develop National Combat Aircraft, also called TF-X, a planned fifth generation
fighter aircraft that will replace American made F-16 fighter jets in both
countries from 2030 onwards. The prototype of the TF-X fighter will be unveiled
in 2023, and aims to have its maiden flight in 2026.
PAF that tried to develop fifth generation fighter aircraft
locally under Project AZM since 2017 has been struggling to go past the study
and concept stages to full fledged preliminary design review due to lack of
aeronautical experience in the country in the development of locally built
fighter jets, which now will make way for TF-X fighter. Pakistan role in the
development of the TF-X fighter program are yet to be revealed but it is
unlikely it will have any major workshare in the program.
Plan to buy 30 Predator drones put on hold
India has put its plan to acquire 30 Predator armed drones
from the US on the back burner, on account of its focus on indigenous
development and manufacturing, as well as the prohibitive cost involved. Although
the Narendra Modi government on February 9 banned the import of drones,
acquisition of unmanned aerial vehicles for defence and security purposes are
exempt, but still require special and specific clearances. As of now, the
Predator deal is off.
The decision to put the acquisition on hold was taken as
India already has some capability in armed drones, it is currently upgrading
the Israeli Heron drones. DRDO is expected to unveil its medium altitude long
endurance, MALE drone latest by March, the country’s national security planners
are looking at futuristic high altitude pseudo satellite, HAPS technology for
surveillance and targeting capability.
