GTRE talks about 110 kilo Newton engine and 6 spinoffs of
that engine
DRDO GTRE revealed plans to develop a new high thrust engine
for the AMCA program and gave out some of the details of the new proposed
engine. The new engine will have a Dry thrust of 72.5 kilo Newton and a Wet
thrust of 110 kilo Newton class that will have a supercruise thrust of Mach 1.3
at 39,000 feet.
DRDO also talked about spinoff programs that can be developed
from the 110 kilo Newton thrust class engine that includes a Futuristic Dry
engine, Uprated 130 kilo Newton Class engine for future, Marine Gas Turbine
engine, Turbo shaft engine, Turbo Fan engine, and Turbo Prop engine.
The spinoff Turbo Fan engine and Turbo Prop engine will be
used on the proposed 90-110 seater Regional Transport Aircraft that NAL plans
to develop in India. Futuristic Dry engine of 72.5 kilo Newton thrust likely to
be used on a Military Transport aircraft program of Indian origin.
HAL plans to make Radio Altimeters for Dornier plane
The Dornier-228 light transport aircraft used by the armed
forces as well as civilian operators are set to get indigenously developed
radio Altimeters which will replace the foreign made gadgets presently being
used in the aircraft.
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited which manufactures the German origin
Dorniers at its Kanpur unit, has invited the Indian industry for the design and
development and subsequent supply of fully assembled radio Altimeters.
The radio Altimeter provides accurate altitude information to
the cockpit crew during low altitude flight, generally up to a height of about
2,500 feet. It consists of a receiver transmitter and antenna for exchange of
information with ground stations. At present, the Dorniers are equipped with
the Collins Alt 4000 radio Altimeter that is manufactured by US.
Tejas Mark II to roll out next year, high speed trials in
2023
A more potent version of the indigenous Tejas multirole
combat jet featuring a much powerful engine, greater load carrying capability,
next-generation electronic warfare system and an array of superior avionics is
expected to be rolled out next year and its first high speed trials will start
in 2023.
Structural package and other work on the Tejas Mark 2 is
progressing well and its production is likely to start somewhere around 2025.
The upgraded version will have a bigger fuselage, longer
range, better maintainability, greater load carrying capability, much stronger
engine power and superior net centric warfare systems.
With increase in range and payload capability, the new
variant will be much superior than Tejas Mark-1A.
After Philippines Navy, Army looks
to induct BrahMos missile in 2023
The Philippines Army is seeking to procure the BrahMos
missile system under the third phase of the Revised Armed Forces of the Philippines
Modernization Program. The ‘third horizon’ will be from 2023 to 2027, The Philippines
Army is yet to acquire the BrahMos missile and some of the programmed
acquisitions are still in process.
Philippines Army will induct two BrahMos missile batteries to
be deployed for coastal defence. The two batteries will serve as a general
support artillery unit and will complement joint territorial defence forces. BrahMos
fulfils the Philippines Army Ground Based Anti-Ship Missile needs and the field
artillery mission to destroy, neutralise, and suppress the enemy through cannon
and rocket fires.
DND inks Brahmos cruise missiles deal with Indian firm
The Department of National Defense on Friday officially
signed the contract for the acquisition of Indian made BrahMos medium range
ramjet supersonic cruise missiles. Defense Secretary Lorenzana and BrahMos
Aerospace director general Atul Dinkar Rane signed the contract worth PHP 18.9
billion in a virtual ceremony at the Department of National headquarters in
Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City.
Lorenzana said the signing of the BrahMos contract is a
milestone for the Armed Forces of the Philippines. The acquisition of Shore Based
Anti-Ship Missiles for the Philippines was first conceptualized in 2017. The
Office of the President approved its inclusion in the Horizon 2 Priority
Projects in 2020 under the Revised AFP Modernization Program. Three batteries
of the BrahMos cruise missiles will be acquired by the country under this
contract. Deliveries of the BrahMos for the Philippines Navy’s Shore Based Anti-Ship
Missile System Acquisition Project are expected to start within a year.
It includes the delivery of three batteries, training for
operators and maintainers as well as the necessary Integrated Logistics Support
package.

Navy inducts two indigenously built Advanced Light
Helicopters ALH DHRUV MK3 in Port Blair
The two indigenously made Advance Light Helicopters ALH DHRUV
MK3 inducted tomorrow in the fleet of Andaman Nicobar Command in Port Blair.
The induction ceremony was held at INS Utkrosh.
The Advanced Light Helicopter, ALH MK3 designed &
developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited is inducted into Andaman Nicobar
Commands fleet after two decades. Equipped with twin powerful shakti engines,
modern radar, electro optical sensors, etc is capable to carry out missions day
& night with maximum 14 soldiers.
The helicopters will act as a force multiplier for far flung
islands of the east in Andaman and Nicobar Command and strengthen its operational
capabilities. It will be utilized in carrying out search and rescue operations,
air ambulance, maritime reconnaissance, and logistics support in these remote
and geographically scattered islands.
Larsen and Toubro gets to build its FICV Prototype
Last year Request for Information for Future Infantry Combat
Vehicle issued by the Indian Army has received the expression of interest from
Larsen and Toubro that was followed by submission of the detailed project
report, Larsen and Toubro will be given a grant under the ‘Make’ category, to
build the prototype for the Army for evaluation and trials.
The RFI looks for three versions, 55% Gun, 20% Command, and
25% Command & Surveillance with design modularity and induction by 2026-27.
Indian Army is looking to procure 1750 tracked FICV’s within two years of the
contract being inked, with at least 75-100 “fully formed vehicles” per year.
Indian Army in its RFI has asked for 3 crew + 8 dismounts,
amphibious capability, minimum 30mm autocannon, minimum 30mm remotely
controlled Automatic Grenade Launcher, minimum 7.62mm coaxial, 4 ready to fire
4th Generation Anti-Tank Guided Missiles ATGMs, Active Protection System
capable of defeating Armour piercing sabot & top attack ATGM, STANAG 5 that
is Standardisation Agreement Edition 5 via add-on armour.
Two more companies, one private and one PSU will be given the
same grant for the development of a prototype that is customized as per
requirements of the Indian Army. Idrw.org has been told that L&T might get
first movers advantage but it is still an open race as more EOI and DPR are

will emerge for a big showdown that will see countrywide trials and
demonstration of the selected.

Liebherr To Heat Indian Helicopters
The Light Utility Helicopter being built in India by HAL will
include heating and ventilation from French company Liebherr. The Light Utility
Helicopter for the Indian Army and Indian Air Force will feature an onboard
heating and ventilation system from Liebherr Aerospace & Transportation,
after the French company signed a contract worth an undisclosed value with
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.
Liebherr and HAL previously cooperated on military aviation
programmes such as the Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter, Tejas light fighter
aircraft and Dornier 228 maritime patrol aircraft. The Indian Defence
Acquisition Council in early November approved the procurement of 12 LUHs from
HAL with the first delivery scheduled for August 2022.
However, ordering a dozen LUHs will barely make a dent on
Indian requirements for 187 new light helicopters to replace elderly Chetak and
Cheetah platforms.
China Tests New Variant Of Powerful Wing Loong Drones,
Experts Call It Similar To American ‘Gray Eagle’ UAVs
A new drone built entirely of composite materials has joined
the Wing Loong family. According to the Aviation Industry Corporation of China,
the multipurpose drone named ‘Wing Loong 1E’ successfully completed its maiden
flight recently.
The large UAV performed an autonomous take-off and then flew
for 22 minutes in a good condition. The new model is built on the proven Wing
Loong UAV platform, which has been refined and enhanced for better performance.
Two days after the maiden flight, analysts claimed that the
new platform would outperform its predecessor in terms of range, endurance,
efficiency, and reliability while remaining cost effective.
The drone has reportedly undergone substantial optimization
and performance advancements over its predecessor. However, the company did not
provide additional information regarding the aircraft’s performance specifications.
The modernization plan of the Indian Army to procure 3,000 to
3,600 howitzers by 2025-27 doesn’t revolve around Dhanush and Atags as expected
but around Israeli Elbit’s Autonomous Towed Howitzer Ordnance System (ATHOS)
155mm into 52 calibers towed artillery gun which Army is so hard lobbying for
in past few years.
Atags which commenced Internal trials followed by Army trials
will continue to be tested till 2025. According to Army, Atags could not
achieve certain parameters in summer trials that required further modifications
but the same parameters were achieved by the ATHOS. Army also claims that ATHOS
costs just 11 crores and is a lighter gun that meets the 15 tons requirement,
whereas Atags is 18 tons and could cost around 16 crores per gun.
Atags has been under some sort of firing trials from 2017
onwards and will continue till 2025 which seems to be a trailer for the repeat
of the Arjun saga that we all watched since our childhood.

China supplies mounted howitzers to Pak to maintain arms
parity with India
In a move that ensures that Pakistan continues to remain
locked up in confrontation with India, Islamabad has received first batch of
Chinese manufactured vehicle mounted howitzers to counter the Indian K-9 Vajra
howitzers. Beijing is also supplying NORINCO AR-1 300mm multi barrel rocket
launchers to Rawalpindi so that the Pakistan Army has a reply to Indian rocket
launchers. The total contract worth is around USD 512 million.
Pakistan in 2019 signed a contract with Chinese arms major
NORINCO to supply 236 SH-15 155mm vehicle mounted howitzers apart from AR-1
heavy rocket launchers. In addition to artillery, the contract also includes
supply and technology transfer for various ammunition including extended range
artillery shells and guided artillery shells with the range of 53 kilometers.
Clearly, this supply is to boost the firepower of Pakistan
army all along the western border, specially to heat up the Line of Control in
Jammu and Kashmir in case the existing ceasefire breaks down or to send a
message on Kashmir.
Pakistan may use larger drones in opposition to India in
future
In the year 2021 there have been as many as 68 drone
sightings in India and this has raised considerations over a brand new safety

few years and close to 40 personnel, including pilots, have died, several
others have been wounded. Almost 80 percent of these helicopters have outlived
their lifespan of 30 years, the rest will cross the 50 year mark in early 2022.
In a 2015 internal communication, the Army headquarters had said that Cheetah
helicopters have virtually become “death traps”.
Quite often, there are no roads to strategic heights like
Siachen, making the Cheetah a lifeline for India’s high-altitude operations.
The primary workhorse for the Indian military has been serving high altitude
areas in observation, surveillance, logistics and rescue roles. But These
Helicopters lack an autopilot system which aggravates the chances of
mishandling of controls in case of pilot disorientation in bad weather.

defence ministry will review Submarine torpedoes deal this
week
According to the original plan, the Indian Navy was to
procure ‘Black Shark’ torpedoes from Italian firm WASS, owned by the
AgustaWestland chopper scam tainted Italian firm Finmeccanica, which had
rebranded itself as ‘Leonardo’ a few years ago.
The plan was that the Navy’s immediate requirement of
heavyweight torpedoes would be met by foreign procurement, while the long term,
larger requirement would be fulfilled through the indigenous manufacturing
route. However, the deal got cancelled in 2016, and a new proposal was
initiated.
The Services are to decide if there is an alternate project
available, adding that the torpedoes will most likely be procured from abroad
since there is no functional indigenous alternative as of now.
First glimpses of Uttam and Astra onboard LCA Tejas
A Promotional video of the LCA Tejas released by the DRDO
shows first glimpses of the Uttam Aesa Fire Control Radar installed on one of
the LSP Tejas that has been used as a Testbed aircraft. Uttam Mk1 that will be
seen on the LCA Tejas Mk1A fleet will have 780 TR modules which will be
installed on the last batch of 52 Mk1A that goes into production from 2026
onwards.
Mk1Aey will also be getting Astra Mk1 Beyond Visual Range air
to air missiles with a range of 110km for which presently systematic flutter
testing to be followed by the inflight flutter and captive trials will commence
in the next few months before the missile is cleared to fire.
As seen in the recent indigenous sensor and weapons package
that DRDO has planned for the LCA Tejas Mk1A program. Astra will be the first
indigenous weapons system that will be followed with the integration of Rudram-1,
Anti Radiation air to surface missile, 1 tons Long Range Glide Bomb, Smart
Anti-Airfield Weapon (SAAW) a precision-guided anti-airfield weapon, and 450 kilograms
Tara High Speed Low Drag GPS guidance and control kit.
Making of the C295 Multi Mission Maritime Aircraft for the
Indian Navy
The C295 tactical air lifter will soon be manufactured by
Airbus Tata in India and rightly has been chosen to be modified into a Multi Mission
Maritime Aircraft variant for airborne surveillance with Command, Control,
Communications, Computers Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance
capabilities for the Indian Navy. For C295 to become reality, the Navy had to
sacrifice its planned purchase of the third batch of six P8I Neptune Maritime
Patrol Aircraft.
CABS officials have revealed that 70% of the sensors required
for this program are similar to the sensors that have already been developed
for Airborne Early Warning and Control program for the Indian Air Force and the
same can be used with minor adaptations. Testing of new AESA radar has already
started that can carry out detection and tracking of air and sea surface
targets.
C295 can be armed with MK-54 Lightweight Torpedoes and two
MBDA’s anti ship missiles underwings to meet its anti-submarine warfare
requirements.
DRDO’s Ultraviolet based Missile Approach Warning Systems
will be installed on all Airbus C295 brought for the IAF and the same might be
deployed on the C295 multi mission maritime aircraft along with EO/IR sensors.
Army signs contract with idea Forge to procure additional
SWITCH 1.0 drones
The Indian Army has again signed a contract with idea Forge
to procure an undisclosed number of a high-altitude variant of SWITCH 1.0
unmanned aerial vehicles to strengthen its surveillance along the Line of
Actual Control. The Army in January 2021 had signed the previous contract with
the Mumbai based company to supply an undisclosed number of SWITCH 1.0 drones
for approximately USD 20 million.
In a statement on Monday, ideaForge said it has fulfilled the
January 2021 contract by supplying the specified number of SWITCH 1.0 drones to
the Indian Army within the prescribed time limit.
SWITCH 1.0 UAV is a fixed wing drone that is capable of
vertical takeoff and landing and it can be deployed at high altitudes and harsh
environments for day and night surveillance.
BSF border patrol all set to gun down Pakistani drones with
specialized devices
