ATAGS: Another Arjun in the Making
The modernization plan of the Indian Army to procure 3,000 to 3,600 howitzers by 2025-27 doesn’t revolve around Dhanush and Atags as expected but around Israeli Elbit’s Autonomous Towed Howitzer Ordnance System (ATHOS) 155mm into 52 calibers towed artillery gun which Army is so hard lobbying for in past few years.
Atags which commenced Internal trials followed by Army trials
will continue to be tested till 2025. According to Army, Atags could not
achieve certain parameters in summer trials that required further modifications
but the same parameters were achieved by the ATHOS. Army also claims that ATHOS
costs just 11 crores and is a lighter gun that meets the 15 tons requirement,
whereas Atags is 18 tons and could cost around 16 crores per gun.
Atags has been under some sort of firing trials from 2017
onwards and will continue till 2025 which seems to be a trailer for the repeat
of the Arjun saga that we all watched since our childhood.

Saab offers GaN tech with Gripen and for LCA and AMCA
The electronic warfare of today has grown leaps and bounds
from its days of simple radio communication jamming. Today, it is also about
sensing and seeing first, deceiving and even controlling the entire
electromagnetic spectrum.
The highly contested battlespace of today necessitates a
superior electronic warfare capability. The Indian Air Force as well can
benefit from a new generation EW solution that gives the pilots an armour of
information advantage. Knowing first is crucial in order to be able to
successfully counter the threats of today and tomorrow, says Kent-Åke Molin,
Sales and Marketing Director at Saab.
When Saab set out to create the smartest electronic warfare
solutions for modern air forces, it aimed for something that was a complete
package. The result was Arexis, an EW suite that offers unrivalled
survivability, superior situational awareness, freedom to act, and a safe
return home.
The EW suite is fully integrated on all Gripen aircraft,
giving the pilots a self-reliant ability to operate without the need of escort
of a specialized EW aircraft. It can also be installed in any other aircraft
type, in a missionized pod or even used with an unmanned vehicle.
Arexis offers both defensive and offensive capabilities
including neutralisation of the Anti- Access/Area Denial (A2/AD) bubble.
Powered by Gallium Nitride (GaN) Active Electronically Scanned Arrays (AESAs)
and fully digitized receivers, Arexis provides superior situational awareness
in every scenario.
Saab has also offered India GaN AESA radar technology. If
India requires, Saab is willing to share its know-how of the GaN technology not
just for the Gripen programme, but also for ongoing and future indigenous
programmes such as the LCA and AMCA , Kent-Åke adds.
China supplies mounted howitzers to Pak to maintain arms
parity with India
In a move that ensures that Pakistan continues to remain
locked up in confrontation with India, Islamabad has received first batch of
Chinese manufactured vehicle mounted howitzers to counter the Indian K-9 Vajra
howitzers. Beijing is also supplying NORINCO AR-1 300mm multi barrel rocket
launchers to Rawalpindi so that the Pakistan Army has a reply to Indian rocket
launchers. The total contract worth is around USD 512 million.
Pakistan in 2019 signed a contract with Chinese arms major
NORINCO to supply 236 SH-15 155mm vehicle mounted howitzers apart from AR-1
heavy rocket launchers. In addition to artillery, the contract also includes
supply and technology transfer for various ammunition including extended range
artillery shells and guided artillery shells with the range of 53 kilometers.
Clearly, this supply is to boost the firepower of Pakistan
army all along the western border, specially to heat up the Line of Control in
Jammu and Kashmir in case the existing ceasefire breaks down or to send a
message on Kashmir.
Pakistan may use larger drones in opposition to India in
future
In the year 2021 there have been as many as 68 drone
sightings in India and this has raised considerations over a brand new safety
menace. The Border Security Force is searching for methods to detect the
smaller drones which were used to smuggle in narcotics and arms from Pakistan.
The investigations which were performed into the varied drone
sightings within the nation have established that they’re coming in from
Pakistan and have been extensively utilized by terror teams such as
Lashkar-e-Tayiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad each in Jammu and Kashmir in addition to
Kashmir. These made in China drones are being offered to the terrorist teams by
the ISI.
The Intelligence Bureau has raised considerations about
Pakistan utilizing larger drones to smuggle in arms and ammunition in Jammu & Kashmir. These drones are a possible
menace and the federal government had been searching for options to counter
this drawback.
