HAL and BEL to manufacture IRST system for Su-30MKI in a Joint Venture
HAL &
Bharat Electronics signed a deal for manufacturing of indigenous infrared
search & tracking system for Su-30MKI under Make In India initiative. The
long range dual band IRST will replace older Russian OLS IRST system being used
in Sukhoi-30MKI.
The IRST will
provide target tracking in the air & on the ground, through its camera, infrared
& laser sensors, This will help pilot to track enemy assets and destroy
them using pin point accuracy, it will in turn enhance the superiority of
Indian Airforce.
India
to choose 6th generation engines for its future fighter jets
French Safran recently offered to develop a
125kN thrust class engine for India’s ambitious fifth generation fighter jet
AMCA, but UK also offered the co-development of new engines for AMCA after
recent visit of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Now it is up to India, whether
they want to go for French Safran Engines or UK’s Tempest Engines for its AMCA
Fighter Jet.
Rolls-Royce
& Safran are busy in developing a 6th generation engines for
FCAS & TEMPEST Fighter Jets, Next generation Engines require 120 to 145kN
thrust with an afterburner with embedded electrical starter generator, that
will maintain the power load of the 6th generation fighter jets.
If
deal is finalised & transfer of technology is done, then this engine will
not only be used in AMCA jets but it will certainly be used in Tejas MK2 jets
& Navy’s TEDBF Program in coming future.
India
to fast track its submarine torpedo launched cruise missile program
Navy is planning to drop VLS for Project-75I
& instead Navy wants to use submarine torpedo launched cruise missiles with
1500 kilometers range which can later on be used in Kalvari class submarines
too, Navy has decide to go for Submarine Torpedo Cruise Missiles instead of VLS
because right now there is not enough Brahmos Missiles with 450+ kilometers
range, most of them are under development specially 800+ & 1500 kms range
hypersonic Brahmos Missiles.
Submarine
torpedo launched missiles will come in two variants: Anti Ship Variant STLCM with
autonomous terminal guidance Radio Frequency seeker and 2nd being Land Attack STLCM with Electro Optical seeker
with a sea skimming for avoiding detection by enemy radars and sensors.
Drdo
will soon start testing of the ejection module of the SLCM, Navy along with DRDO
will use Kalvari Submarines for initial tests, SLCM are used to eject missiles
& help submarines in getting edge over enemy by remaining out of its range
& detection.
Rudram-III
: Is it an Air launched ballistic missile or Hypersonic missile?
Few
weeks ago, schematic diagram of Rudram-III was made public, after which there
were huge speculations on whether Rudram-III is a Ballistic Missile or it is
actually a Hypersonic Missile, Hypersonic missiles travels at Mach 5 speed but
Rudram-III can’t be termed as Hypersonic Missile even though it can attain a
hypersonic speed as well.
Rudram-III
has a Quasi-Ballistic flight which help it in achieving hypersonic speed and in
turn helps the missile getting undetected by enemy radars, After the launch of
the Rudram-III Missile, its single stage booster speeds up its velocity even
more & second stage dual pulse motor helps missile in achieving low
hypersonic velocity in final terminal stage of the missile.

if launched from Air such as from Fighter jets such as Sukhoi-30MKI makes it
more unpredictable & undetectable than if it is launched from ground
platforms, still it can’t be classified as Hypersonic Missiles of the category
that many countries of the world are currently testing their hypersonic weapons.
What has been stated
publicly and has been said for years, in private, in the defense establishment,
on rethink of the L1 concept in defense procurement under which contracts are
awarded only to the lowest bidder. Army chief Gen MM Naravane recently called
for changes in the system and said that the L1 rider also means India is denied
the chance of acquiring more capable systems than a Request for Proposal originally
aims for. Such systems cannot be bought because their costs are higher than
what the Services seek. The requirements are formulated years before the

Not so long ago when India’s
Aeronautical Development Agency had floated tenders for a new high thrust
engine to power its then proposed Tejas Mk2 aircraft. American multinational giant
General Electric offered its GE F-414 engines and the EuroJet Turbo consortium
offered its Eurojet EJ-200 engine. Then IAF had wanted to go for Eurojet EJ-200
engine due to the previous American regime’s sanction on the LCA Tejas program
that saw GE being prevented from supplying spares and components for the F-404
engines that were powering Tejas Mk1 Prototypes and also due to strategic
calculations that had favoured European engines for the Tejas Mk2 program.
When Aeronautical Development
Agency opened bids, GE was declared L1 and it is said that EuroJet Turbo offer
was marginally higher but it had agreed to match General Electric’s price if
given a chance. But the strict tender requirements could have meant that it had
to be retendered and bids invited again which Aeronautical Development Agency
was not in favour of and soon contract was awarded to the GE.

India’s Aeronautical
Development Agency had selected 99 F-414 GE fighter jet engines to power the Mk2
version of the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft for the Indian Air Force way back in
2010 while Tejas Mk2 program evolved from being just a re-engineering program
to Medium class fighter jets, no efforts were made to go back and buy Eurojet
EJ-200 engines for the program.
The US has yet again warned
India that it could face sanctions over it acquiring five batteries of the
Russian Almaz Antei S400 Triumf systems and if the supply of F-414 GE INS6
engines are delayed or stopped it will affect not only the Tejas Mk2 program
but also AMCA and TEDBF program which could delay the whole program for years
if not by decade.

GTRE talks about 110 kilo Newton engine and 6 spinoffs of
that engine
DRDO GTRE revealed plans to develop a new high thrust engine
for the AMCA program and gave out some of the details of the new proposed
engine. The new engine will have a Dry thrust of 72.5 kilo Newton and a Wet
thrust of 110 kilo Newton class that will have a supercruise thrust of Mach 1.3
at 39,000 feet.
DRDO also talked about spinoff programs that can be developed
from the 110 kilo Newton thrust class engine that includes a Futuristic Dry
engine, Uprated 130 kilo Newton Class engine for future, Marine Gas Turbine
engine, Turbo shaft engine, Turbo Fan engine, and Turbo Prop engine.
The spinoff Turbo Fan engine and Turbo Prop engine will be
used on the proposed 90-110 seater Regional Transport Aircraft that NAL plans
to develop in India. Futuristic Dry engine of 72.5 kilo Newton thrust likely to
be used on a Military Transport aircraft program of Indian origin.
HAL plans to make Radio Altimeters for Dornier plane
The Dornier-228 light transport aircraft used by the armed
forces as well as civilian operators are set to get indigenously developed
radio Altimeters which will replace the foreign made gadgets presently being
used in the aircraft.
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited which manufactures the German origin
Dorniers at its Kanpur unit, has invited the Indian industry for the design and
development and subsequent supply of fully assembled radio Altimeters.
The radio Altimeter provides accurate altitude information to
the cockpit crew during low altitude flight, generally up to a height of about
2,500 feet. It consists of a receiver transmitter and antenna for exchange of
information with ground stations. At present, the Dorniers are equipped with
the Collins Alt 4000 radio Altimeter that is manufactured by US.
Tejas Mark II to roll out next year, high speed trials in
2023
A more potent version of the indigenous Tejas multirole
combat jet featuring a much powerful engine, greater load carrying capability,
next-generation electronic warfare system and an array of superior avionics is
expected to be rolled out next year and its first high speed trials will start
in 2023.
Structural package and other work on the Tejas Mark 2 is
progressing well and its production is likely to start somewhere around 2025.
The upgraded version will have a bigger fuselage, longer
range, better maintainability, greater load carrying capability, much stronger
engine power and superior net centric warfare systems.
With increase in range and payload capability, the new
variant will be much superior than Tejas Mark-1A.
After Philippines Navy, Army looks
to induct BrahMos missile in 2023
The Philippines Army is seeking to procure the BrahMos
missile system under the third phase of the Revised Armed Forces of the Philippines
Modernization Program. The ‘third horizon’ will be from 2023 to 2027, The Philippines
Army is yet to acquire the BrahMos missile and some of the programmed
acquisitions are still in process.
Philippines Army will induct two BrahMos missile batteries to
be deployed for coastal defence. The two batteries will serve as a general
support artillery unit and will complement joint territorial defence forces. BrahMos
fulfils the Philippines Army Ground Based Anti-Ship Missile needs and the field
artillery mission to destroy, neutralise, and suppress the enemy through cannon
and rocket fires.
