ABHYAS to augment India’s defence capability with HEAT system as HAL secures massive order

In yet another shot in the arm for India, state owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited has successfully secured an order for manufacturing, assembling, integrating, testing and supplying the High Speed Expendable Aerial Target( HEAT) system known as Abhyas from the Aeronautical Development Establishment of DRDO.

Following the successful completion of the order, HAL would be identified as the development cum production partner for the supply of this target system along with a private firm. It is estimated to have large requirement from tri services – Indian Army, Indian Air Force and Indian Navy and DRDO laboratories for evaluation trials of the missile programme.

Abhyas was first successfully flight tested in May 2019 and subsequent evaluation trials are being conducted by ADE & DRDO. This order would mark the beginning of the series production of Abhyas. The latest development comes after HAL signed a contract with Bharat Electronics Limited for the development and supply of 20 types of systems for the LCA Tejas Mk1A programme.

French Defence Minister Offers Rafale-M Jets For India’s 2nd Aircraft Carrier

France is ready to provide additional Rafale fighter jets to India if it requires, French Defence Minister Florence Parley said on Friday while noting that the use of the same aircraft by the two strategic partners is a reflection of real asset and strength in their ties.

The French embassy on Thursday said a total of 33 Rafale jets have already been delivered to India as per schedule despite the pandemic. The French minister also referred to India’s planned induction of a second aircraft carrier and indicated that France will be interested to supply the carrier-based jets. We know that the aircraft carrier will soon be there & that carrier-based aircrafts are needed. We are open and ready to provide any other Rafale if this is India’s decision.

India’s first home made aircraft carrier Vikrant is scheduled to be inducted into the Indian Navy by August next year. In her comments, French Defence Minister said France and India are both “viscerally committed” to national sovereignty and independence. France, more than any other country, understands the necessity of the Indian content. And we are fully committed to the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

After Indian Multirole Helicopter HAL has plans for Chinook Class transport helicopter

HAL has started work on the design and development of the Indian Multi Role Helicopter (IMRH), a 13 tons medium lift helicopter that will eventually replace the Mi-17 fleet from the Indian Armed forces starting from 2032 onwards.

HAL’s Chairman and Managing Director R. Madhavan confirmed that the company is also looking to work on 20 to 24 tons helicopter that will put it in the league of heavy lift transport helicopter class.

HAL will discuss with armed forces before the configuration of the new helicopter class is confirmed but these new helicopters will be placed above IMRH but in the same class of Boeing CH-47 Chinook but below Mi-26 fleet of Heavy helicopters in the hierarchy.

After IMRH, the next class of helicopters will feature a next generation coaxial rotor system and push propeller for fast acceleration and deceleration, better speed, and combat radius.

Guided rockets: PSU made to work with private sector to get DRDO systems

The new defence PSUs formed out of the Ordnance Factory Board are now depending on the private sector to complete the latest guided Pinaka rocket systems they are working on. The guided rocket has a range of over 70km and is precise on the target due to the guidance kit. It is being jointly made by Yantra India Limited and Munitions India Limited. Based at Nagpur, Yantra is providing the hardware while filling is to be done by Munitions India Limited, which has its headquarters in Pune.

Nagpur’s Economic Explosives Limited is also working on the guided rocket project and is at an advanced stage. Without the technology for the guidance kits, on which the performance of the rockets hinges, the PSUs had approached the two companies to complete the project.

The PSUs are learnt to be now close to a deal with Bharat Forge. Bharat Forge confirmed that the company will be supplying the kit. After that, it would be a joint endeavour.

France Offers Barracuda, India Tests SFDR, BEL to Supply LCA Tejas Systems, J-20 Mass Production, Apache Deal Scrapped

HAL Signs Rs 2400 Crore Contract with BEL to supply systems for the LCA Tejas Mk1A program

In a major boost to indigenization, HAL signed a contract with Bharat Electronics Limited for development and supply of 20 types of systems for the LCA Tejas Mk1A program. The five year contract spanning from 2023 to 2028 is valued at Rs 2400 crores and involves supplying critical avionics Line Replaceable Units, flight control computers and night flying units. This is the biggest ever order that HALL has placed on any Indian company boosting ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ campaign.

The order for supply of these systems for 83 Tejas Mk1A fighter fleet will be executed by two Divisions of Bharat Electronics Limited at Bengaluru and Panchkula (Haryana). All the contracted items will be delivered by Bharat Electronics to HAL in a ready to board condition.

The home grown fighter is slated to be equipped with indigenous flight control computers, air data computers which would also be supplied by Bharat Electronics under this contract.

France Set To Offer Barracuda Nuclear Submarines To India

France is set to dramatically scale up defence cooperation with India by putting the Barracuda nuclear attack submarine on the table. French Defence Minister Florence Parley is expected to broach the offer for the Barracudas with a Make in India element during her visit to India on December 17 to 18.

This is the most significant offer of military equipment to India and could give the Indian Navy formidable sea denial capability in the Indian Ocean Region and provide it the sea legs to exercise a credible military presence in the Indo Pacific Region.

This reported French offer to provide India the knowhow to make nuclear submarines has the potential to establish France as India’s pre-eminent Defence partner, a position traditionally enjoyed by Russia.

The Barracuda class submarine is nuclear powered but not nuclear armed. An SSN like the Barracuda is nonetheless the most formidable sea denial weapon. This submarine, while remaining submerged for extended durations, has a powerful land attack capability with the 1,000km range Scalp Naval cruise missile. The time between refuelling is a reported 10 years.

China's Chengdu Aerospace Has Begun Full Scale Mass Production of J-20 Stealth Fighters

The firm announced that it broke records in the quantities of J-20s delivered due to high demand from the Air Force, with experts announcing on December 12 that the fighter entered a mass production phase. The decision was reportedly influenced by advances in the program including the development of the indigenous WS-10B engine, which was integrated onto the new J-20A and J-20B variants and replaced Russian engines which had powered earlier variants. Estimates for the number of J-20 fighters in service have varied widely, from around 50-60 to over 100.

The J-20 has evolved considerably since entering service in March 2017, and integrates a range of ground-breaking technologies including distributed aperture systems for greater situational awareness and AESA radar guided air to air missiles which provide advantages over any foreign heavyweight aircraft.

India Tests SFDR Technology Critical For Development Of Long Range Air To Air Missiles

DRDO tested its Solid Fueled Ducted Ramjet SFDR technology for the fourth time with a demonstration flight. The development of SFDR technology will enable India to make its own long range air to air like MBDA’s Meteor which the Indian Air Force uses on its Rafales.

During the test, air launch scenario was simulated using a booster motor. Subsequently, the nozzle-less booster accelerated it to the required Mash number for Ramjet operation.

India has been working on the Mark-too version of home grown Astra air to air missile which will have a range of around 160 kilometer. The SFDR propulsion system which was also tested in 2019 is critical for the missiles performance in the terminal phase of its flight towards the target. The Meteor missile also depends on its ramjet propulsion for more energy to manoeuver during the endgame of the engagement.

The ramjet motor propulsion system provides the missile with thrust all the way to target intercept, providing the largest ‘No-Escape Zone’ of any air to air missile.

No plans to make an attack helicopter in the Apache Class: HAL

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited plans to take up the design and development of the 13 tons category medium lift helicopter named Indian Multirole Helicopter suitable for tactical troop movement, combat search, and rescue, combat logistics support, casualty evacuation etc but HAL has No plans to make an attack helicopter in the Apache Class confirmed HAL’s Chairman and Managing Director R. Madhavan.

The performance of the LCH at high altitudes has been exceptional. Handling and take-off capability exceed that of even the Apache at such high altitudes and the market for Apache Class helicopter in the armed forces in India are limited as the bulk of attack helicopters will be made up of light combat helicopters.

LCH already has entered Limited Series Production (LSP) and the first helicopter was handed over to the Indian Air force by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal Vivek Ram Chaudhari recently. Madhavan said that level of indigenization will be higher in SP (Series Production). Indian Army and Indian Air force have a total projected requirement of 160 LCHs.

Aeronautical Development Establishment starts work on HALE Class UAV

ADE has been cleared to design and develop India’s first High altitude long endurance HALE class UAV. The new HALE Class UAV features a high wing monoplane design with a pusher engine that seems to have a satellite antenna integrated inside the fuselage and a smaller internal payload bay that provide more than adequate space for the installation of multiple payloads that may comprise electro optical radar and electronic surveillance missions.

New UAV will be bigger than the Rustam-1 & there seem to be quite a bit of design similarities with the Heron-TP Drone but upon closer inspection, this new unmanned aerial vehicle sports winglets that are not seen on Heron-TP and the engine casing also seems to be different indicating it will have different engines, along with that it features submerged air intake, instead of standalone air intake seen on Heron-TP.

New UAV will likely get a new single high power Turbo Prop engine in range of 1,000-1,200 horse power output that will be more powerful then twin engine Turboprop engine seen in the Rustam-2 that can take it even further higher and will be able to cruise at 40,000 to 45,000 feet that Rustam-2 technically isn’t designed to reach this level. HAL is also working on HALE Class UAV of its own but with turbofan engine as the powerplant that will able to cruise above 50,000 feet.

BEL offers Tethered Drone to secure IAF airbases

Public sector Company, Bharat Electronics Limited has designed and developed a Hexacopter that can carry an electro optic payload to provide long detection ranges and is powered by wire cables that enable it to fly for six hours to provide non stop aerial reconnaissance and intelligence gathering to secure Indian air force base against aerial intrusions by UAVs and Drones.

BEL says that the company has developed the Hexacopter Drone in less than 9 months and the drone also has provisions for internal batteries in case of power failure that will allow it to land back safely. After six hours of continuous operation, Hexacopter can resume operations after one hour break that is done to cool off its motors. But commercially their exists Tethered Drones that can operate for 24 hours without break.

BEL is also working to develop Hexacopter-20, Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) UAV capable of performing collaborative missions with other multicopters. Hexacopter can be customized to take and activate desired payloads like Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Relief, Light Detection, and Ranging.

Rustam-II program inching towards finish line

The indigenous Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) Unmanned Aerial Vehicle development programme by DRDO has crossed a milestone by reaching an altitude of 25,000 feet and an endurance of 10 hours, DRDO Chairman Doctor Sateesh Reddy said.

Within two months, DRDO will demonstrate an altitude of 30,000 feet and 18 hours endurance meeting the requirements of the Services. It has advanced capabilities and meets the requirements of the three Services. Once the capabilities are demonstrated in two months, it should be ready to be handed to the Services.

A programme for a more capable High Altitude Long Range (HALE) UAV is also in the works. It technologically matches contemporary UAVs available and will also be cheaper than the imported ones. With some delays in development, the Rustom-II last year successfully flew for eight hours at an altitude of 16,000 feet. It has been designed and developed by the Aeronautical Development Establishment, Bengaluru with production partners being the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and the Bharat Electronics Limited.

It is being developed to carry out surveillance and reconnaissance roles and is capable of carrying different combinations of advanced payload and capable of auto landing among others. High endurance UAVs are a priority requirement for the armed forces especially in the standoff with China in Eastern Ladakh.

DRDO to test HSTDV in 2022 again

With China, Russia and the US actively building aerodynamically manoeuverable hypersonic weapons that fly over five times the speed of sound, defence minister Rajnath Singh has directed DRDO to move fast towards developing such arsenal to maintain India’s minimum credible deterrence against adversaries.

Towards this end, India is planning to conduct another test of its hypersonic technology demonstrator vehicle HSTDV, powered by a scramjet engine, by early next year. The HSTDV, which was successfully tested for the first time in September last year, will serve as a crucial building block in the development of long range hypersonic weapons, which will take at least another four to five years to become a reality. A hypersonic weapon can either be a glide vehicle launched from a rocket or a scramjet powered cruise missile.

Ashok Leyland & CVRDE developed 600-HP engine for futuristic combat vehicles and demonstrated successfully

As the development cum production partner, Ashok Leyland has developed the engine in a record time despite the total lockdown, On Wednesday the testing of the engine at the Engine Development Centre of Ashok Leyland located near Chennai was done. The 600 HP engine will undergo rigorous testing in lab and will be qualified for application in tanks. Ashok Leyland will undertake series production of the engine post induction into service.

Details of Viral AWACS AVRO Picture

Last month Former IAF fighter pilot Sameer Joshi on Twitter posted an image of what seems to be an HS-748 Avro aircraft platform fitted with a rotodome on its fuselage. Not many were sure if the image that went viral over social media was of the old AWACS AVRO program that has been long abandoned now or was the first official confirmation of old workhorse again being pushed back into service to test the new dome that DRDO along with CABS had fabricated for the A330 AWACS Indian Program that now has been pushed back to make way for the smaller A319 based Netra Mk1 AEW&C program.

The viral AWACS AVRO Picture has been traced back to the Guwahati Air Base where it has been caught in satellite imagery when it was parked in the open just off the main runway. We scanned previous satellite images of the same area and found that in 2018, AVRO was seen for the first time in the same location but without any dome visible in the satellite images. In 2020, Avro had gone missing from the same location but by October 2021 satellite image scans captured Avro again but this time with a dome.

In 2018 satellite image of the Avro was sported with the old dual paint scheme of IAF that was white on top and chrome on the lower fuselage section but the 2021 Avro seen with the dome seems to have got a new Tipnis grey paint scheme that is now seen on all Avro aircraft fleet in IAF. But no one can say in certainty that both Avro aircraft seen in the same location are of the same aircraft but it does look like it was.

Now questions of what’s it is doing in such a forward and sensitive airbase close to the Chinese border is any bodies guess and we don’t know much about it but it certainly is not a grounded aircraft nor it is an old aircraft that was used as a testbed for the now-cancelled AWACS AVRO program.

India issues 2 more NOTAM’s for Missile Tests

India has issued a Notice to Airmen NOTAM for a launch of an experimental flight vehicle in the Bay of Bengal for the period for 16-17 and 22. The designated area for first NOTAM is 739km that indicates that it will probably will be test of cruise missile and second designated area for NOTAM is for 1272km that probably will be for a Ballistic missiles.

For the month of December, DRDO already has tested Pinaka Enhanced Rockets, SANT Anti-Tank Missiles, Supersonic Missile Assisted Torpedo SMART, BrahMos-A and VL-SRSAM Missile. Experts believe that due to prolonged monsoon season and frequent cyclones and depressions near the Chandipur test range this year many of the missile tests that are experimental in nature and carried highest risk factors were kept pending and now are being cleared to meet program deadlines.

Kalyani Group demonstrates ECARS UGV to Indian Army

Indian Army and Industry experts carried out Unmanned Ground Vehicle Experiment from 9 to 13 December 21 at the Babina Field Firing Ranges where Kalyani Group also demonstrated its Enhanced Collaborative Autonomous Rover System ECARS in front of the Army officials. The 4x4 Multi-Terrain vehicle is specially designed to be capable of Multi Mission and Multi Task.

This four wheeled vehicle has many more added features One of them is the plethora of sensors such as Positioning, Mapping, Path Planning & Obstacle detection that makes it competent to operate under all types of terrain.

ECARS can operate up to 24 hours continuously when working on battery and generator or 6 hours continuously in silent mode. Kalyani Group has developed Two versions, ECARS 4x4 and ECARS 6x6 that are designed to perform surveillance, security, safety and rescue missions.

Rustam-2 demonstrated flight at 25,000 feet for over 10 hours

The armed forces have been looking for high quality, high endurance Unmanned Aerial Vehicles or UAVs And they are particularly useful along the line of control with Pakistan or the Line of Actual control with China. Rustam Too, the new UAV can fly at 25,000 feet for over 10 hours. In too months they will fly at 28,000 feet and for over 18 hours. This is what the armed forces want. This is what they will get. Drdo is taking up the issues of higher altitude and longer range. The UAVs besides having better capabilities, will have automatic take-off and landing facilities. Once ready, Hindustan Aeronautics and Bharat Electronics will begin production.

DRDO develops special fire entry suit that can be worn inside burning buildings

Burn injuries are a worry. And after the horrific helicopter crash this month killing 13 people including General Bipin Rawat, even more so. DRDO have just readied suits that are more fire resistant. A special Fire Entry suit can allow someone to go inside a burning building, or for that matter, an aircraft or helicopter. Rescue personnel in these special suits can be inside a fire zone for 150 seconds, a lot of time when every second is of enormous value.

A lightweight structural firefighting suit can allow rescue personnel to enter a burning building to bring out people. The DRDO versions have exceeded the European EN-469 standard and equalled the American 4971 standard. They are cheaper, indigenous and at 25 kilograms are lighter than many suits.

 

Supersonic Torpedo Smart Test, Indian Navy's Israeli SCRG Gun, RTA-90 Aircraft, France To Offer Nuclear Submarine

DRDO successfully tests long range Supersonic Missile Assisted Release of Torpedo

The DRDO on Monday tested a long range Supersonic Missile Assisted Torpedo SMART. The test was done from Wheeler Island in Odisha. The system is a next generation missile based standoff torpedo delivery system. During the test, the full range capability of the missile was successfully demonstrated. The system has been designed to enhance anti-submarine warfare capability far beyond the conventional range of the torpedo.

This was a textbook launch where the entire trajectory was monitored by the electro optic telemetry system, various range radars including the downrange instrumentation and downrange ships. The missile carried a torpedo, parachute delivery system and release mechanisms.

This canister-based missile system consists of advanced technologies like too stage solid propulsion, electro mechanical actuators and precision inertial navigation. The missile is launched from a ground mobile launcher and it can cover a range of distances. A number of DRDO laboratories have developed various technologies for this advanced missile system. Indian Navy’s new gun to bust pirates & terrorists uses Israeli technology

Last month, the Indian Navy commissioned its most advanced destroyer, the INS Visakhapatnam. One does not need to be a defence buff to be impressed by the scale and sleek lines of the Visakhapatnam and its menacing weapons like the 76mm main gun, anti submarine rocket launchers and BrahMos missiles.  

The INS Visakhapatnam gives the Indian Navy world class air defence capabilities. This is due to the combination of its MF-STAR phased array radar which can detect scores of enemy aircraft and missiles hundreds of kilometres away and (MRSAM) Medium Range Surface to Air Missile which can shoot down airborne targets including supersonic anti-ship missiles.

The Visakhapatnam has another Israeli origin weapon system that has not attracted much publicity that is the ship had been fitted with an SRCG (Stabilised Remote Control Gun), A gun fitted with an oversized CCTV camera.

The Ordnance Factory of Tiruchirappalli had handed over to the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard the first batch of 25 SRCG systems in June. The SRCG was built under a transfer of technology pact with Israeli company Elbit.

French defence minister to visit India, likely to offer cooperation in Nuclear submarine program

French Defence Minister Florence Parley is visiting India this week with cooperation in the maritime domain topping the agenda with Paris keen to focus on New Delhi as its primary partner in the Indo Pacific region.

HAL bats for New indigenous Transport / Passenger Aircraft Program

C-295 program procured to replace the older Avro aircraft fleet in IAF but small sections within IAF are also supporting procuring more C-295 aircraft so that it can eventually also replace workhorse AN-32, a soviet era medium haul transport aircraft in the fleet that could result in orders for 100 more C-295 that has got HAL worried.

HAL’s proposed Avro upgrade program has not been cleared by IAF and In NAL’s Regional Transport Aircraft RTA-90 program, HAL was supposed to be a manufacturing partner but the program has not moved due to the pandemic situation.

Lack of experience of NAL is also hindering its proposal due to which HAL is keen to led new project. HAL doesn’t want to concede Transport aircraft space to the private sector companies in India that will keep foreign origin aircraft in production, HAL is lobbying with Ministry of Defence and IAF to let it come up with a conceptual design of the MTA Class aircraft in coming years for which it held talks with IAF.

10 Russian Kamov-28 submarine hunting helicopters with the Indian Navy will start getting IAI’s Skimmer Naval Helicopter Package that will include advanced mission systems, sensors, and avionics such as Radar, Electronic Warfare Support Measures, Electro Optic Payloads, Data link, Communication Intelligence, Sonar, Sonics, Mission and Management and Monitoring Systems.

In 2016, the Ministry of Defence and Russian manufacturer Rosoboron Export had signed an agreement where it was decided that the helicopters will be first sent to Kumertau in Russia at the facility of Russian Helicopters where they will undergo a technical overhaul to enhance the aircraft’s life and performance.

After their return from Russia at Naval air station Dega, IAI Technicians will then carry out the integration of the Skimmer Naval Helicopter Package that will be certified by the Russian Helicopter experts before they are cleared to join back in service with the Indian Navy.

Abdul Kalam Missile Complex scores a hat-trick of launches

The APJ Abdul Kalam Missile Complex which houses the Research Centre Imarat, Defence Research & Development Laboratory and the Advanced Systems Laboratory scored a hat-trick of sorts with three successful launches — vertical launch of Short Range Surface to Air Missile SR-SAM, air version of Brahmos supersonic cruise missile and the Stand Off Anti-Tank SANT missile this month. The first two were test fired at Chandipur integrated test range off the coast of Odisha and the last one was flight tested from the Pokhran range in Rajasthan, all indigenously developed.

The VL-SRSAM missile is for the Indian Navy to be fixed on the ships. It was launched against an electronic target at a very low altitude and all sub systems performed as per expectation.

The first trial was held in February this year and the latest one is confirmatory trial to prove the consistent performance of the configuration and integrated operation.

Brahmos was being tested for advanced propulsions, engines, airframes, navigation and guidance systems. It was test fired from the supersonic fighter aircraft Sukhoi-30MKI, paving the way for the serial production of air-version of the missiles. The first test was held in July. BrahMos is a joint venture between Indias DRDO and Russia NPOM, already inducted into the Armed Forces.

SANT is equipped with a state-of-the-art MMW seeker and propulsion technology providing high precision strike capability with 10km range.

The flight test was successful in meeting all its mission objectives. The release mechanism, advanced guidance and tracking algorithms, all avionics with integrated software, performed satisfactorily and tracking systems monitored all mission events.

Indigenously designed and developed Helicopter launched Standoff Anti-tank SANT Missile was successfully flight tested from Pokhran ranges.

DRDO’s Phase-II under Ballistic Missile Defence program will see the development of Two new Interceptor missiles that will be able to intercept intercontinental Ballistic missiles as well as Long range Hypersonic glide and cruise missiles and these next generation interceptor missiles will be much more suitable to intercept next generation hypersonic missiles system then S-500 system on offer to India.

While DRDO has been tight lipped about India’s Ballistic Missile Defence program but it is confirmed that new long range interceptor missiles that are under development will factor in and have the ability to intercept hypersonic glide and hypersonic cruise missiles that can change trajectories and can manoeuver towards its targets making it much more difficult to be intercepted by present Ballistic Missile Defence systems. DRDO is also working on Two Hypersonic cruise missiles system of its own.

The Indian Air Force and Indian Army Apache fleet need NLOS missiles

In a highly consequential technological development, the AH-64E Apache attack helicopter is likely to see its lethality increase significantly with the introduction of a new Israeli developed Spike Non Line of Sight (NLOS) missile. The United States Army’s heliborne aviation wing, which operates the AH-64 Apache is gearing up to equip and integrate this capability for its fleet. Spike NLOS is integrated with an electro optical guidance system or camera that gives the Spike NLOS day and night vision.

The missile has a 25 kilometre range, which is connected by a wireless data link system to the Apache from which it is launched. The Israeli manufacturing entity Rafael says: “The Spike NLOS system is a member of the world renowned Spike Family”. Its additional features include being able to attack targets at standoff ranges without line of sight.

According to the manufacturer, it can be employed in a whole range of battlefield scenarios such as in anti-armour or tank operations, counter-insurgency missions, standoff attacks geared for supporting Special Forces operations and small unit missions.

It’s time IAF starts backing 5th and 6th Generation jet programs

IAF is considering jumping from 4.5 generation Tejas Mk1A to 5th generation AMCA program that will mean the Tejas Mk2 program more or less will be scrapped if the IAF get to take the shot and the Ministry of Defence decides to take a back seat. AMCA will start arriving from 2035 onwards and at least three to four countries might have flown or at least demonstrated sixth generation technology on aircraft that will enter service sometime in 2035-40.

BAE Systems led Tempest and the Dassault Aviation-led Future Combat Air System F-Cas and America’s Next Generation Air Dominance (NGad) are already in the works and it also seems Russia and China will also join the bandwagon by 2035 for which these countries are developing next generation swarming drones and a combat cloud designed to ensure information superiority.

India’s 5th generation AMCA Program is officially yet to take off and India will be the last country to join the 5th generation bandwagon that means it will have a considerable fleet of 5th generation jets only in 2035-45.

India will also be the last of the countries that will join the 6th generation fighter program if it ever can develop successfully a 5th generation platform first. IAF even in 2040 will be made up of 90% of 4.5 generation fighter. Yes 4.5 generation fighters will not disappear not at least till 2050-60 worldwide but their strength in terms of composition in the combat fleet will be less than 40-30% in most of the airforces around the world as 5th generation jets will take majority of the fleet.

Egypt keen on acquiring Brahmos from India

India and Egypt have held talks on the sidelines of the EDEX 2021, Egypt’s leading tri service defense and security exhibition on the possible sale of Mach 3 capable Supersonic Brahmos cruise missiles from India claimed a report.

Key officials from the Egyptian Armed force visited the BrahMos Aerospace pavilion at EDEX 2021 and were seen discussing the missile system with senior officials of BrahMos Aerospace. Egypt showed interest in the BrahMos system Way back in 2016 first and initial talks were held but it couldn’t conclude into a deal.

The report says that India is under pressure from its close ally Israel not to sell the BrahMos system to Egypt since it could strengthen the Egyptian armed forces offensive capabilities but India insists that the Brahmos that is on offer to Egypt are limited to 290km range and doesn’t compromise security grid of the Israeli air defense system.

The Russian side confirms its readiness to arrange full scale production of the latest version of the Kalashnikov assault rifle within two to three years to provide India’s defense structures with advanced small arms. The first batch of AK-203 assault rifles will be produced in India with a various degree of local output, following which their full-scale production on India’s soil will begin.

US Company Lockheed Martin Corporation has formally recognised Tata Lockheed Martin Aerostructures-Limited as a potential future coproducer of fighter wings. Tata Lockheed Martin Hyderabad facility indigenously produced the first fighter wing shipset.

KT Rama Rao, Minister for Industries and Commerce, Telangana, along with other government officials, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics and Global Business Development executives and Tata Advanced Systems Limited and Tata Lockheed Martin’s leadership attended a ceremonial event to mark the production of first fighter wing prototype at the Tata Lockheed Martin’s facility at Adibatla in Hyderabad.

Tata Lockheed Martin Facility build one of the most technologically complex aerostructures interchangeable and replaceable fighter wing.

Lockheed Martin and Tata entered into an agreement to develop a F-16 fighter wing prototype in 2018. Through the project, Tata Lockheed Martin demonstrated the capability to perform detailed part manufacturing and delivery of a fully compliant representative fighter aircraft wing shipset.

This will further strengthen Lockheed Martin’s partnership with India and support its F-21 offering for procurement of 114 new fighter aircraft for India and the Indian Air Force by providing additional indigenous production capability.

New Made-In-India VL-SRSAM Missile Successfully Tested To Strengthen Navy

India on Tuesday successfully flight tested the indigenously developed new Vertical Launch Short Range Surface to Air Missile (VL-SRSAM) from the coast off Balasore. The quick reaction surface to air missile developed by DRDO was test launched from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur at about 3.08 pm from a vertical launcher against an electronic target at a very low altitude.

The air defence system can engage targets at around 15km is being developed by DRDO for naval warships. VL-SRSAM is capable of neutralising various aerial threats at close ranges including sea skimming targets.

The next generation all weather air defence missile system can provide point and area defence against various aerial targets like jets, fighter aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles. The canister-based state of art weapon system can identify, track, engage and destroy the target with high kill probability. It has a strike range of about 40km.

IAF to start User Trials of Uttam Aesa Radar soon

Indian Air Force will start user trials cum evaluation of the indigenously developed Uttam active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar later this month which has been developed by the Electronics and Radar Development Establishment.

Uttam has 95% indigenous content that can track 50 targets in the sky at a range above 100km and engage four of them simultaneously. Once cleared for production, Uttam Radar will be mounted on the 16th LCA Tejas Mk1A aircraft and eventually on all 123 jets and derivatives of the radar will be used on the entire Sukhoi 30MKI fleet as well as on the carrier based MiG-29K fighter fleet.

Uttam Aesa Radar already has been installed on two Limited series LCA Tejas aircraft and another one is installed on the Hawker Siddeley 800 Business executive jet on lease to the program and has completed 250 hours of in-flight trials in all modes.

India’s Bio jet Fuel Technology Receives Military Recognition

India’s Ministry of Science and Technology announced that it has awarded provisional clearance to a domestically developed technology which produced bio-based jet fuel for use on military aircraft.

The fuel underwent inspection and evaluation testing, along with trials over the last three years. The certification announced on the 29th of November marks an acknowledgment of the satisfactory results obtained from various ground and inflight testing.

This provisional clearance allows the Indian Air Force to use bio-based jet fuel, produced using CSIR IIP’s technology across all operational aircraft, thereby enabling commercialisation of the technology.

Defence Tri-Service exercise conducted in high reaches of Kashmir valley

Chinar Corps conducted a helicopter borne training and validation exercise in the higher reaches of Kashmir valley. This was a tri service exercise undertaken in Kashmir with the Indian Air Force, Navy and Army.

The exercise was planned to validate the joint capability to insert the task force tactically behind enemy lines in an intense air defence and electronic warfare operating environment. The successful conduct of the mission validated the true spirit of jointness achieved in planning, utilisation of resources and accomplishment of laid down mission objectives as a true reflection of the tri service ethos of the Indian Armed forces.

The helicopter dropped task force operated in the snow-clad region at heights over 9000 feet. The heliborne task force included troops from Infantry, The Special Forces and the MARCOS from Indian Navy. The heli drop exercise included full transportation and armed helicopters from Indian Army and Indian Air Force including the Apaches attack helicopters.

The exercise showcased the capability of the Chinar Corps and the Indian Army to carry out successful operations in high altitude areas incorporating all facets of contemporary and modern battlefield in synergy with Indian Air Force and Indian Navy.

Russia hopes for new deliveries of S400 missile systems to India under contract’s option

Russia keeps implementing a contract on the delivery of S-400 medium to long range anti-aircraft missile systems to India and hopes for new deliveries under the contract’s option.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said earlier on Monday that the deal on the delivery of Russian made S-400 surface to air missile systems to India was proceeding as planned despite US attempts to disrupt Russia India cooperation in this sphere.

The Rosoboron Export head said in mid-November that Russia had begun the deliveries of S-400 medium to long range anti-aircraft missile systems to India ahead of schedule. He said that the Indian specialists who would operate the first regiment had completed their training and returned home. The chief executive specified that the first regiment of S-400 surface to air missile systems would be delivered to India by the end of this year.

Soon travel in India made plane: HAL successfully conducts trials on Hindustan-228 commercial plane

Ministry of Defence confirmed that HAL has successfully carried out testing on IndiaMade-Hindustan-228 which is based on the Dornier-228 already assembled by HAL in the country. HAL did the ground run and Low Speed Taxi Trials on the India’s first commercial plane. All the tests were conducted in coordination with DGCA.

The state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Limited earlier partnered with Alliance Air to lease two India made Dornier-228 aircrafts for operations in the North East. As per HAL, the versatile aircraft has the capabilities of short take-off and landing, ability to land and take off from semi prepared runways.
