Is France M88-4 & Kaveri Hybrid Advance Enough for AMCA?

As Safran Aircraft Engines gets busy jointly developing a new engine with Germany’s MTU Aero Engines to power Europe’s 6th Generation Next Generation Fighter program. Safran Aircraft Engines along with Consortium of Indian companies (HALL/ GTRE/MIDANI/KALYANI) have also decided to develop a new engine for India’s 5.5 Generation AMCA fighter jet program under which it plans to develop a new 110 kilo Newton Thrust Class but since details of the program are not available in the public domain, we will have to rely on previous offers that were made by France.

Safran Aircraft Engines for the last decade or more held talks with India’s GTRE to develop a new engine that will be Hybrid between M88 & Kaveri engine, that will see an amalgamation of technologies from both countries. The original idea was to use old studies done by the Safran Aircraft Engines for the development of M88-4 in the mid 90s that could generate 110 kilo Newton Class of Reheat thrust and was originally offered as a replacement to Mirage 2000 operators that were sold with an M-53K that is 95 kilo Newton Reheat engines.

M88-4 was not considered by French Air Force nor by any other operator of the Mirage-2000 but Safran Aircraft Engines did try to sell them to aircraft manufactures like Saab, as a potential replacement for the Volvo Aero Engines RM-12 (General Electric F404) in the JAS-39 Gripen but that never materialized.

M88-4 in concept meets the criteria set by the designers of the AMCA but this concept is over 30 years old now and procuring them for 5.5 and even for the 6th generation fighter program will mean staying behind the curves since engines play a vital role in defining a fighter jet in the class it wants to be known.

M88-4 Core likely will be using a Distortion tolerant fan that DRDO has developed but it also needs a thermal management system that will require the new engine to tap into advanced composite materials for its exhaust system technologies. Many countries are also now moving towards an electrical embedded starter generator that doesn’t require a gearbox underneath the engine that in turn makes engine dimensions smaller and that’s what is desirable in a stealthy platform.

AMCA also requires its new engine to have the ability to go supersonic without the use of afterburners that will also require engine calibration to the airframe and high temperature core that can generate enough Dry thrust. M88-4 even though never went into production nor it was demonstrated to its full potential, India still wants a new engine it plans to develop that has a growth potential of 20-30% so that a higher thrust engine can be developed if required for future aerospace programs.

Since the M88-4 concept was based on an upgraded M88 Too Core, it’s not clear if the M88-4 core technically will have the same level of growth potential for future variants. M88-4 concept can’t be adapted as a whole in 2030 developed fighter jet since the technology behind this engine will be over 40 years old.

While it’s important that India needs to invest in the new jet engine program for its AMCA Stealth platform but it also needs to ensure that the engine is adaptable to the modern propulsion technologies that are already underway so that it remains technologically relevant for the next 40 and more years for both AMCA and what will come beyond it.

India needs to get its hands not only on the Core Technology but also on the thermal management system, DRDO and other associate labs over the years have developed multiple pieces in the jigsaw called jet engines that should give it enough confidence to go for more since the jet engine technology after a brief pause is again seeing rapid growth in adoption of newer techs in this field world over and India can’t afford to stay behind the curve.

Mig-29UPG SuperBaaz, Ganga Turbofan Engine, India Russia 3+3 Kilo Submarine Deal, GRSE International Warship Orders, India Objects to Skardu Flights

IAF might just agree on MiG-29UPG Super Baaz

India will finally ink a contract for the supply of 21 Mig-29UPG fighter jets that will be used to beef up combat squadrons of the Indian Air Force when Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to visit India on December 6 for the 21st India Russia Annual Summit.

India is procuring unused airframes of 21 Mig-29 jets that will be upgraded by HAL in India with UPG level upgrades that will see D-29 EW suit made by DRDO and other Russian components including radio electronics and armaments. HAL has proposed to replace the current Russian supplied Zhuk-M pulse doppler electronically scanned array radar with the locally developed Uttam AESA Fire Control Radar along with a New Mission Computer that HAL is developing for the Naval Mig-29K fleet.

HAL in collaboration with the Navy is working to develop a modified New Mission Computer for the Mig-29K fleet that will enable integration of the indigenous Astra Beyond Visual Range Air to air missile along with other locally made weapon systems like SAAW and BrahMos-NG,  & same has been proposed for the new 21 Mig-29UPG jets.

The upgrade of the Indian Air Force’s MiG-29 fighters to the MiG-29UPG level will be completed in 2022, idrw.org has been told that 21 MiG-29 will start coming from 2024 onwards as the aircraft upgrade kit will come from Russia. Upgraded Mig-29UPG fleet was deployed in the region of Ladakh that was awarded Chief of Air Staff’s citation’ for providing excellent air defense as well as air-to-ground operations in the Northern sector and carried out extensive operations at high altitudes.

Indian Navy likely to approve 3+3 Kilo deal with Russia

Last year, Russia offered India to sale 3 Old Kilo class Diesel Electric conventional submarines and carry out Major Refit and Life Certification MRLC for three existing Kilo submarines in the Indian Navy for $1.5billion. 3 old submarines on offer to India have been decommissioned from the Russian Navy in 2020 and 2019 since then kept in storage as they moved forward with the construction of Project 636.3, an improved version of the Kilo class.

Russia has offered 3 Old Kilo class submarines for a $250 Million deal but after factoring in Refit cost that is around $170-200 Million per ship, each ship will come to $260-300 Million. Refit carried out on a decommissioned ship will only add service life by 10 years but this will boost the strength of the kilo fleet back to the original 10 in the Indian Navy.

Earlier this year, the Indian Navy retired one of its older Kilo class submarines and last year had transferred one to Myanmar Navy. Indian Navy has lost one Kilo submarine in 2013 due to an internal explosion due to which it sank at Mumbai’s naval dockyard resulting in the death of 18 crew members.

Indian Navy team will be visiting dry dockyard facilities in Russia soon where these submarines are in storage for last 2-3 years for inspection and later Team will file a report to the Naval Head Quarters after which a final decision will be taken.

After Kaveri engine is India working on the Ganga Turbofan engine?

Some are speculating that Project Ganga is attempt to reverse engineer the        AL -31FP engine for which India has received full Transfer of Technology and can manufacture them from Raw material stage in India itself but some see it to Fix technical issues in the AL-31FP engines and improve its Mean Time Between Overhaul but nothing is clear at this point of time what actual intention was or If the program is still active.

High 100 kg/sec Mass airflow demand suggests that the Dry Power generation requirement from the engine will be around 88 kilo Newton and with an Afterburner section that could be in the range of 123-125 kilo Newton Class of thrust that is similar to the Russian AL-31FP version with thrust vector control that is installed on Sukhoi-30MKI fleet that is currently in service with IAF.

GTRE old tender documents that was floated for manufacturing of a Fan section in 2014 that could support a mass airflow of 100 kg/sec with fan weight of 180kg which is more than what could be required to develop a Dry Kaveri engine variant that requires 78 kg/sec is sparking speculation on social media that it could be a new engine development that has been codenamed ” Ganga”.

It’s speculated that Kalyani had won the tender to supply 4-5 new fan section back then for this program, but it’s not clear if was an active project or as part of the research and development. Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL) and GTRE are using AL-31FP to test the endurance of the new bi-layer Thermal Barrier Coating and in a way, it is also used to further advance the development of next-generation technologies for the Indigenous modular two-shaft turbofan engine for application beyond AMCA.
