LCA Tejas out of Argentina Bid, Vikrant Trial Delay, Predator Drone helps India, China's 3rd Carrier

British Components keeps India’s LCA-Tejas out of Argentina’s fighter bid

On May 12, 2021, a Chinese delegation met with the Argentinian authorities to discuss the potential sale of 12 FC-1 fighter jets, then came reports of India’s LCA Tejas fighter jet also being considered by Argentina but 3 major British components in the LCA Tejas mean that, no such proposal could be cleared due to likely denial of the export license for components that are sourced from the UK.

Quartz Nose cone (Radome) and the “Air to Air Refuelling Probe for the FOC Configuration” LCA Tejas fighters are supplied by the British aerospace manufacturing company Cobham, along with that LCA Tejas fleet is also equipped with the Mk 16 I N 16G zero/zero ejection seat that is made by the British company Martin Baker.

India’s delayed Aircraft Carrier plan raises concerns as China readies its third one

China's third aircraft carrier is on the fast track. Construction of the warship, known as Type 003, has made "significant progress", according to the latest images released by a commercial satellite. The vessel—expected to be the largest surface combatant in the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy is scheduled to be launched before the year end.

The development has made India's military planners more anxious as the Navy is operating with only a single aircraft carrier, while the construction of the second and the country's first indigenous aircraft carrier is constantly hit with speed breakers.

In 2012, China commissioned its first aircraft carrier Liaoning, while the second carrier, Shandong, was launched in 2019. Beijing is said to be further seeking to add at least two more carrier vessels.

Sea Trials of INS Vikrant faces delays

Sea trials of the INS Vikrant that were supposed to have begun in the first half of this year will likely commence by October when rainy seasons in the southern part of the country start receding.

Delays were largely due to the second wave of pandemic situation in the country that led to delays in the movement of the manpower from the Navy and other equipment manufacturers that supplied systems for the INS Vikrant.

Various lockdowns in the states and Travel and Visa restrictions also contributed to delays in the sea trials. INS Vikrant has completed its Basin trials last year in November and Sea trials were to start before the onset of the monsoon but that coincided with the arrival of the second wave of pandemic in the country.

INS Vikrant already has been incorporated with its weapon systems and Once the sea trials of the INS Vikrant are completed it will start air operations trials by the landing of the Mig 29K carrier borne fighter jets.

Predator Drones helps us keep watch on ‘vessels of interest’ from any country like China, Says Indian Navy Vice Chief

Amid the ongoing standoff with China along the northern borders, the Indian Navy said that two Predator (“MQ-9 Sea Guardian drones”) are helping the maritime force enhance its surveillance all across the Indian Ocean region and keep a close watch on the 'vessels of interest' passing from there.

The two drones were leased by the Indian Navy from the US during the height of the clash in Ladakh's Galwan Valley to help the forces keep a close eye on the movement of the Chinese warships and other suspicious vessels.

The Chinese Navy affiliated Research vessels generally operate in the Indian Ocean region for surveillance activities and their activities are of interest to the Indian forces.

India is also processing the case for the acquisition of 30 more of these drones which will come armed with Hellfire missiles which will allow the taking down of any potential targets by the forces during its surveillance missions.

KF-21 : After Rollout, Why Korea is dismantling its only Prototype

Two months after its much hyped April 9 unveiling, the KF-21 Boramae is being dismantled, raising awkward questions about the true readiness of the prototype of Korea’s first indigenously developed fighter jet.

As the prototype essentially returns to the assembly phase, critics are asking if the jet, dubbed the Korean Fighter experimental (KF-X) prior to its official unveiling, was hastily assembled to appear ready before the ceremony.

The view of various experts is that the removal of crucial components of the plane, such as its landing gear, refuelling and key piloting systems, goes above and beyond what is necessary before tests are conducted on the jet.
