Trials commence for made-in-India artillery guns
A set of critical trials for the indigenous Advanced Towed Artillery Gun (ATAGS) commenced this week to determine whether it meets standards of safety and performance desired by the army. The project will be reviewed after the tests, which will include firing in a variety of modes and terrains.
The project had received a setback in September last year
after a barrel burst during tests at Pokharan, resulting in injuries to the
personnel manning the system.
The user assisted testing trials will last for three
weeks, after which the army will decide whether the guns need to go through
field evaluation trials at high altitude as well.
The ongoing tests are crucial for the indigenous gun but
its design continues to be an issue, specially the non standard chamber size of
the ATAGS which determines the size of the projectile it can fire. While NATO
standard guns have a chamber size of 23 litres, the ATAGS is designed for 25
litres, giving it a slightly extended range of 48 kilometers.
A clearer picture is expected to emerge after the current
set of tests, which will include direct fire in day and night on tank sized
targets, sustained firing of 60 rounds per hour, tests for five round bursts
and a rapid fire rate of 15 rounds in three minutes.
Pakistan’s New Type 054 A/P Frigate Started Sea Trials In
China

HAL hits a road bump, LCA-AF-MK2 Rollout to be effected
Indigenous LCA Tejas and LCH program seem to be have been
most hit with further delays in their production capabilities due to frequent
lockdowns and outbreak of the pandemic directly at its facility or at the
facility of the MSME private supply chain for the program that will have
spillover effects also on the LCA AF Mk2 program.
HAL had started metal cutting exercise for the LCA-AF-Mk2
program earlier this year and everything seemed to be on track till the second
wave of the pandemic hit the country that was much deadlier than the last one.
Many of the supply chains have requested an extension to
the supply of components/ tools/ machines that were meant for the LCA-AF-Mk2
program due to lack of manpower or due to issues with state lockdowns, that
could affect the rollout of the first aircraft that was supposed to happen in
August 2022 might be delayed till early 2023.
US Marines Experimenting With Tomahawk For Land Attack &
Anti Ship Missions
The Tomahawk is one missile capability that US Marines
are experimenting with. The Tomahawk program is funded. Marines will test
different systems in different configurations to ensure how best to employ the
missile system.
The launchers may be elevated or vertical. Testing and
experimentation will show what launch method works best under what
circumstances.
Tomahawk missiles have the capability to support both
roles, but testing and evaluation will help refine how to employ them as a
capability set. Testing and experimentation will help define what the Tomahawk
is capable of in different scenarios.
After knowing its capability, US Marines will refine how
best to employ the system fired from land or from aboard a US Navy ship’s
helicopter flight deck.
Testing and experimentation will lead to the right
configuration. A Long Range Fire (LFR) battery is one option that is being
considered.
