HAL looks to the future with lethal new warfighting system

Air power theorists have for some years broadly agreed that the days of manned aircraft are over, since too much planning, equipment and survival systems are needed to protect human crew members. Even the current fifth generation of manned fighters – America’s F-35, the Russian Sukhoi-35, Chinese J-31 and F-20 and India’s AMCA would be followed by unmanned drones that would be remotely directed to their targets, where their weapon loads would be autonomously released.

In the Aero India 2021 air show last February HAL’s stall highlighted the Combat Air Teaming System CATS, a combination of manned and unmanned systems that will operate in tandem in wartime.

Burned by the shooting down of a MiG-21 aircraft and the capture of its pilot after a dogfight over the India Pakistan border in February 2019, CATS eliminates the need to send pilots into enemy air space. This eliminates the risk of their being shot down, captured and held hostage.

CATS concept of operations involves manned aircraft with unmanned kill vehicles that swarm in numbers into enemy air space and hostile defences. It has four components -   Mothership Cats Max, For Striking more than 1000 kilometers deep inside enemy territory - Cats Warriors and Cats Hunter. The fourth component of CATS are swarming drones called CATS ALFA.

HAL is developing the ALFAs in partnership with a small, startup firm New Space Research and Technologies. The concept also visualises the CATS INFINITY, a high altitude, pseudo satellite that can be launched as a control vehicle and stay aloft for up to six months. It is powered by solar energy and has huge wings to accommodate the solar panels.

Indian army new uniform: Indian Army to get new combat uniform with a digital disruptive pattern

The Indian Army's new combat uniform will feature a mix of colours including olive and earthen. It will be light, more durable and comfortable to wear in both summers and winters.

The new uniform is expected to be showcased at the Indian Army Day parade on January 15, 2022. Indian Army's new uniform has reportedly been finalised after wide ranging discussions and analysis of military uniforms of several countries.

The new uniform has been designed taking into considerations aspects such as areas of deployment of the troops and climatic conditions in which they operate.

The decision to bring out a new combat dress for the Indian Army was taken at the Army Commanders' Conference held recently. The camouflage uniforms will be totally different from the existing dress. The Indian Navy had also similarly unveiled a new camouflage uniform last year.

India’s working on a stealthy, Futuristic Unmanned Fighter Aircraft FUFA Program?

India’s Aeronautical Development Establishment has floated a tender for vendors who can supply wind tunnel model that can be tested at National Tunnel Test Facility at IIT Kanpur, wind tunnel model is of Futuristic Unmanned Fighter Aircraft (FUFA) program that seems to be new Stealth Wing Flying concept in works over Indian Unmanned Strike Air Vehicle.

Tender documents hint why it is not Unmanned Strike Air Vehicle, for starters, it has split rudder control surface deflection that is not seen in the Unmanned Strike Air Vehicle design, and second is its ability to demonstrate low supersonic speeds that are usually not found in subsonic Unmanned Strike aircraft.

Since it is a very initial stage, not much information has been known but it could possibly be a new autonomous jet fighter aircraft intended to accompany manned combat jets into battle.

Many countries are working to develop Unmanned Fighter Aircraft that can be used to conduct a multitude of military actions, such as strategic offensive, close air support (CAS), missile offensive, suppression of enemy air defenses (SEAD), and destruction of enemy air defenses (DEAD) & India’s Cats Warrior.

Russia Successfully Tests S-500 Anti-Missile Defence Systems Prototypes In The Arctic; Headed To India?

Russia has recently performed routine testing of S-500 anti-missile defence systems in the Arctic area, a source told Sputnik on December 29. The source further revealed that prototypes of the S-550 are still to be created. The long-range missile of the system was launched against a hypersonic target, which was effectively destroyed. Further tests of the S-500 will be held, citing the source, Sputnik reported.

Furthermore, during the month of September, Russia's Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov stated that the new S-500 anti-aircraft missile system had passed official testing and that the first batches had been given to the country's armed services. Following that in November, Dmitry Shugaev, the head of Russia's Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation (FSMTC), indicated that India, as well as China, may receive Russia's modernistic S-500 anti-aircraft missile systems in the future.

5 Years Of Submarine Secrecy: India's Unique Arihant Class Is Still In Hiding

Although photographs of the Arihant Class are very rare, analysis of satellite imagery and the few photos that are available give some indications of the internal arrangement. 5 years after she was commissioned in 2016, the Indian Navy’s INS Arihant remains something of an enigma. Her existence is no secret, in fact it is a proud achievement of Indian industry. But photographs are very few. And nearly all those you will find on the internet are many years old. It is a very secretive submarine program

Few submarines are less photographed than India’s two Arihant Class ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs). The lead boat, INS Arihant (S2), was commissioned in 2016 and a second boat, INS Arighat (S3) is expected to join her in service this year.

The Arihant is a unique design which can be characterized as a ‘pocket boomer’. It is much smaller than other ballistic missile submarines (North Koreas’ conventionally powered boats excepted). Its hull is shorter and thinner than its contemporaries and it only carries four missile silos.

But this does not take away from the industrial achievement of an indigenous nuclear-powered submarine. And in many respects its modest size seems pragmatic. Other countries now taking the nuclear submarine path, such as Brazil, are also going for smaller types.

Navy commits to procure 60 Naval Indian Multi Role Helicopter (IMRH)

Admiral R Hari Kumar, Chief of the Naval Staff, Indian Navy said that the initial proposal of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited was for 3 separate variants of IMRH, that can be used for Special Operations, Anti Surface Warfare + Anti Submarine Warfare but the Navy has rejected this proposal.

Navy has asked HAL for the development of a common multirole helicopter with both Anti Surface Warfare & Anti Submarine Warfare capability that can also be used for Special Operations / Search & Rescue, Utility / Vertical Replenishment and airborne mine countermeasures.

HAL plans to develop Army and Air Force Prototypes by 2023 for initial ground benchmark tests before they can be cleared for its first flight in 2026 and enter production in 2029. Naval IMRH might take longer than its Army and Air Force variants and might be available sometime in 2030.

India set to conduct trials of Rafale fighter’s naval version

With India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier set to be commissioned as INS Vikrant in August 2022, the Indian Navy will conduct flight trials of the naval version of the Rafale fighter at its shore based test facility at INS Hansa in Goa from January 6 onwards as part of the exercise to identify the best warplane suited for the 40,000 tons carrier.

The Marine Rafale fighter will be pushed through an intensive trial at the 283metre mockup ski jump facility at INS Hansa for about 12 days to assess whether the aircraft is the best suited for Vikrant.

Rafale-M is lighter and smaller in airframe to F/A-18 Hornet, and packs more punch than its American counterpart in terms of the range of its air to air and air to land missiles. Vikrant may require structural modifications to cart F/A-18 Hornet from hanger to flight deck due to its comparatively larger airframe.

Astra Mk1 Demonstrated long range against Low RCS Target

Astra Mk1 took down a Banshee target drone in head on mode when it was about 87km away from the launch platform. This is a significant demonstration of the capability of the missile since target drones usually have very low Radar cross section (RCS) due to the small size of the drones making it very difficult to take down at long range.

Test confirmed that Astra Mk1 is capable of engaging a wide range of airborne targets autonomously, including cruise missiles with less than 1 meter square RCS. Astra Mk1 has a range ranging from 90km to 110km depending on the Target RCS and launch altitudes of the missile and in the last three trials, it has demonstrated maximum and minimum range against target drones even against manoeuvring targets.

Korea Briefs IAF Chief on KF-21 Boramae Program

Indian Air Force chief Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari who in his official tour of South Korea was briefed about Korea’s KF-21 Boramae program, which is a new fighter aircraft jointly been developed by South Korea and Indonesia. Earlier this year prototype of the first KF-21 was rolled out at KAIs Sacheon production facility.

KF-21 Boramae is a 4.5 Generation fighter jet program that can be later upgraded to a 5th generation fighter jet. KF-21 Mk1 will be a 4.5 generation fighter that will be tested and certified first and Mk-too will come with Internal Weapons Bay and Sealth coating that will make it a 5th generation fighter jet.

Backing TEDBF, Navy now reduces MRCBF requirements

The navy is now looking for 26 carrier borne fighters, This revised figure is for a reduced number of aircraft from that explored in a 2017 RFI for 57 aircraft.

This lower number is driven by expectations that reduced expenditure would be processed faster. This smaller buy is also because the MRCBF is now anticipated to be a stop gap, with expectations that the India’s indigenous Twin Engine Deck Based Fighter would take-off by 2026 to be inducted by 2032. But while the numbers are smaller, the acquisition needs to be addressed soon, given that India’s new Vikrant aircraft carrier is expected to be commissioned this year.

With the LCA Navy not considered fit for carrier operations and the capabilities of the in service MiG-29K expected to have diminishing relevance over the next decade, the buy is important even if downsized.

Lockheed to design New Israeli F-35C variant for unknown customer that might be India

Lockheed Martin has received orders from the United States to design and develop an F-35 variant tailored for an unspecified Foreign Military Sales customer. The company will perform engineering work and other efforts relating to the design and development of a new variant of the aircraft as part of the five year project. Don’t expect the new variant to be as different to the others as F-35B. This is likely more like the F-35I, an F-35A with unique Israeli avionics modifications.

Lockheed Martin is planning to offer this Israeli Modified F-35I to India that supports its F-21 offering for procurement of 114 new fighter aircraft exclusively for India and the Indian Air Force by proving additional indigenous production capability.

Lockheed Martin is already manufacturing the wings for F-21 fighter jets in Hyderabad with Tata-Lockheed Martin Aerostructures Limited, So it won’t be difficult for Lockheed Martin to setup production plant of F-35I, F-35C and F-21 in India if India says yes to the Deal Offered.

How Tejas Mark 2 is evolving into a bigger & powerful fighter?

The Tejas Mark 2 is no longer an LCA, but a significantly larger and more capable Medium Combat Aircraft, with a higher thrust engine and a 1.5 metre increase in length. Wings have been pushed outwards, effectively increasing the fighter’s wingspan by 300mm.

The key change in the Tejas Mark 2 is its significantly more powerful General Electric F-414 engine, The Tejas Mark 2’s increased payload capacity will inable it to integrate significantly more weapons and sensors than the Mark 1 fighter. For air-to-air combat, the Mark 2 will carry the indigenous Astra Mark 1 and Mark Too missiles. It would also carry Rudram anti-radiation missiles, developed by the DRDO.

DRDO is developing a range of bombs for the Tejas Mark 2, such as the Tara high speed, low drag bomb that is mounted on the pylons. It will also have the option of carrying laser guided bombs. Tejas Mark 2 may be integrated with the SCALP missile that has been procured along with the Rafale fighters.

China replaces soldiers with robots in Tibet as soldiers ‘fleeing’ in harsh winters

As the unsolved India China border dispute brews tensions, China is sending machine gun wielding robots to the frontier to intensify the situation, dozens of autonomous vehicles capable of transporting both weapons and supplies are being dispatched to Tibet, with the bulk being deployed in border regions where Chinese troops are engaged in a standoff with Indian troops.

The Sharp Claw, which can be handled wirelessly and is armed with a light machinegun, and the Mule-200, which is meant as an unmanned delivery truck but can also be equipped with weaponry, are two examples of vehicles. China is now supplying troops with Mule-200 unmanned vehicles, while also giving guns to its military. Around 120-200 mules have also been dispatched to Tibet, the majority of which will be stationed near the border.

China has also provided 70 VP-22 armoured military vehicles to supplement the unmanned vehicles. 77 of these are in border areas. A total of 150 Lynx ‘all-terrain vehicles’ have been dispatched to the border. The Lynx is employed by a wide range of armies and is frequently utilised to carry troops.

Russia’s latest nuclear-powered icebreaker ‘Sibir’ to boost India’s Arctic plans via Northern Sea Root

Russia has launched a new nuclear-powered icebreaker ‘Sibir’ that will contribute to the rapidly growing fleet of lethal icebreakers to keep the Northern Sea Root open for year round shipping through the Arctic enabling wider presence of India in the region.

During the 21st edition of the India Russia summit held on December 6, the Indian Side also expressed its interest in collaborating with Russia on the Northern Sea Root and expressed its readiness to play an active role as an Observer in the Arctic Council.

Oil and gas reserves in the Russian Arctic may be sufficient for the country, for decades and even centuries, according to Russian estimates. Simultaneously, the Arctic is opening new opportunities for hydrocarbons and other potential resources that lie unexplored beneath its ice.

HAL joins DRDO in building 5th generation advanced combat aircraft AMCA

IAF is already flying the first 32 Tejas Mark 1 fighters, and an order for 83 Tejas Mark 1A has been placed on Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. Meanwhile, there have been important development breakthroughs in the following 2 fighter programmes: the Tejas Mark 2 and the 5th generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).

The IAF has accorded the Tejas Mark 2 its comprehensive design review (CDR), which means its design has been found viable and the manufacture of its first prototypes cleared. The AMCA is one step behind, with its preliminary design review (PDR) done last December. It was anticipated that its CDR would also be completed this December, but it now more realistically targeted for end of 2022.

AMCA’s stealth shaping had been completed, its design is now mature and its internal systems are laid out. The accord of the CDR next year would clear the way for metal cutting – the symbolic start of constructing a flying prototype.

The AMCA’s first flight is targeted for 2024 to 25. HAL plans to build five prototypes for a flight testing programme that would take about four years. By 2028 to 29, HAL plans to begin series manufacture.

After Python 5, Tejas to get Advanced Short Range Air To Air Missiles

India’s indigenous Light Combat Aircraft Tejas, will get ASRAAM Missile Within Visual Range missile added to the Tejas aircraft. Earlier this year 5th generation Python 5 Air to Air Missile acquired from Israel was tested and cleared for operational usage by the IAF.

Tejas aircraft had successfully fired the Vympel R-73 air to air missile for the first time way back in 2010 but IAF had opted for Israeli Python 5 as its standard Within Visual Range (WVR) missiles but following delays in captive flight trials due to flutter issues with the missile, there were delays in certifying the missile on the Tejas by two years.

Earlier this year, Bharat Dynamics Limited and MBDA, UK agreed to establish a facility for the final assembly, integration, and test of advanced short range air to air missile in India that is expected to commence operations by the year 2022 to 23.

BDL plans to manufacture ASRAAM at its Bhanur Unit for domestic needs and also export in the future through MBDA. IAF had acquired ASRAAM for the Jaguar fleet now has plans to use it as a standard WVR missile system on other types and Tejas will be the first to get them after the Jaguar fleet.

Philippines allots P2.8B to acquire India’s BrahMos

The Philippines budget department has released initial funding worth nearly P5 billion for the armed forces planned acquisition of shore based anti-ship missile system and combat utility helicopters.

The Philippines was expected to acquire India’s BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles under a government-to-government deal. The Philippines and India have signed an “implementing agreement” early this year for the potential procurement of BrahMos missile and other Indian defense equipment.

The missile system which can be used for coastal defense and ground attack would boost Philippine military firepower in the face of threats to its maritime territory, coming mainly from Chinese aggression in the South China Sea.

S4 Spotted again, Ready for Sea Trials

India’s third Nuclear submarine & ballistic missile submarine SSBN S4 was again seen in satellite imaginaries where it seems it is ready to begin sea trials that the Navy plans to commence from 2022 onwards. Earlier this year, A new submarine cover was seen at Vizag which was 40 metre longer than the previous submarine cover that was used for Arihant class submarines, which confirmed for the first time that S4 had moved out of dry docks at Ship Building Center in Visakhapatnam to Fitting out dock.

S4 along with its sister class S4 Star are stretched Arihant Class submarines that have 7000 tons submerged displacements that are 1000 tons more than the Arihant class submarine. The stretched section on S4 and S4* allows it to carry more ballistic missiles SLBMs and will be the first to feature K5 SLBM that has a range of over 5000 kilometers.

S4* will be moved to Fitting out dock sometime in 2022 and will be ready for sea trials in 2023 onwards before it is cleared for induction. Post completion of work on S4*, the Indian Navy has plans to start construction of S5 Class of submarines that are nearly double the size of the S4 class submarines and have a 13000 tons displacement.

Pakistan confirms raising squadron of Chinese J-10C in response to India’s Rafale jets

Putting the speculations to rest, the government of Pakistan has confirmed the acquisition of at least 25 Chinese J-10C fighter jets for the Pakistan Air Force.

Pakistan’s interior minister Sheikh Rashid told reporters in Rawalpindi on Wednesday that a squadron of 25 China made jets would participate in a fly past on 23 March. The minister touted the Chinese jets as an answer to India’s Rafale jets.

The J-10C is considered a capable workhorse of the Chinese air force, but it falls below the cutting-edge capabilities of the Rafale. Chinese state media often looks to place the mid-sized fighter jet closer to the Rafale but Rafale’s integrated architecture, superior sensors and overall combat capabilities set it apart.
