Tejas WVR Missile, Advanced Armata Offer, Nuclear Submarine S5* Ready by 2025?, Philippines Release Funds to Acquire BrahMos

After Python 5, Tejas to get Advanced Short Range Air To Air Missiles

India’s indigenous Light Combat Aircraft Tejas, will get ASRAAM Missile Within Visual Range missile added to the Tejas aircraft. Earlier this year 5th generation Python 5 Air to Air Missile acquired from Israel was tested and cleared for operational usage by the IAF.

Tejas aircraft had successfully fired the Vympel R-73 air to air missile for the first time way back in 2010 but IAF had opted for Israeli Python 5 as its standard Within Visual Range (WVR) missiles but following delays in captive flight trials due to flutter issues with the missile, there were delays in certifying the missile on the Tejas by two years.

Earlier this year, Bharat Dynamics Limited and MBDA, UK agreed to establish a facility for the final assembly, integration, and test of advanced short range air to air missile in India that is expected to commence operations by the year 2022 to 23.

BDL plans to manufacture ASRAAM at its Bhanur Unit for domestic needs and also export in the future through MBDA. IAF had acquired ASRAAM for the Jaguar fleet now has plans to use it as a standard WVR missile system on other types and Tejas will be the first to get them after the Jaguar fleet.

Philippines allots P2.8B to acquire India’s BrahMos

The Philippines budget department has released initial funding worth nearly P5 billion for the armed forces planned acquisition of shore based anti-ship missile system and combat utility helicopters.

The Philippines was expected to acquire India’s BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles under a government-to-government deal. The Philippines and India have signed an “implementing agreement” early this year for the potential procurement of BrahMos missile and other Indian defense equipment.

The missile system which can be used for coastal defense and ground attack would boost Philippine military firepower in the face of threats to its maritime territory, coming mainly from Chinese aggression in the South China Sea.

S4 Spotted again, Ready for Sea Trials

India’s third Nuclear submarine & ballistic missile submarine SSBN S4 was again seen in satellite imaginaries where it seems it is ready to begin sea trials that the Navy plans to commence from 2022 onwards. Earlier this year, A new submarine cover was seen at Vizag which was 40 metre longer than the previous submarine cover that was used for Arihant class submarines, which confirmed for the first time that S4 had moved out of dry docks at Ship Building Center in Visakhapatnam to Fitting out dock.

S4 along with its sister class S4 Star are stretched Arihant Class submarines that have 7000 tons submerged displacements that are 1000 tons more than the Arihant class submarine. The stretched section on S4 and S4* allows it to carry more ballistic missiles SLBMs and will be the first to feature K5 SLBM that has a range of over 5000 kilometers.

S4* will be moved to Fitting out dock sometime in 2022 and will be ready for sea trials in 2023 onwards before it is cleared for induction. Post completion of work on S4*, the Indian Navy has plans to start construction of S5 Class of submarines that are nearly double the size of the S4 class submarines and have a 13000 tons displacement.

Pakistan confirms raising squadron of Chinese J-10C in response to India’s Rafale jets

Putting the speculations to rest, the government of Pakistan has confirmed the acquisition of at least 25 Chinese J-10C fighter jets for the Pakistan Air Force.

Pakistan’s interior minister Sheikh Rashid told reporters in Rawalpindi on Wednesday that a squadron of 25 China made jets would participate in a fly past on 23 March. The minister touted the Chinese jets as an answer to India’s Rafale jets.

The J-10C is considered a capable workhorse of the Chinese air force, but it falls below the cutting-edge capabilities of the Rafale. Chinese state media often looks to place the mid-sized fighter jet closer to the Rafale but Rafale’s integrated architecture, superior sensors and overall combat capabilities set it apart.
