Russia Bets Big On S-500; But How Is S 500 Missile Defense
System Better Than S-400s?
Russian President Vladimir Putin has said the country is about to complete trials of the much awaited S-500 air defense system, adding it will subsequently be inducted into the Russian military.
Over 70% of surface-to-air missile regiments in the Aerospace
Force have been re-armed with advanced S-400 systems. The S-500 system whose
trials are successfully nearing completion is next to be delivered to the
troops,” Putin said on a televised address on May 25.
The Russian S-500 has been designed to counter NATO’s
advanced stealth platforms, including F 35 Lighting II and F 22 Raptor,
considered the world’s most advanced fighter aircraft.
The S-500 is a potent improvisation over its predecessor, the
S-400, and this weapon system brings new capabilities into defensive warfare
that no country currently possesses.
The most significant feature is the upgraded 77N6 series
missiles, which will be employed to intercept hypersonic missiles and any other
weapons platforms cruising at speeds of over Mach 5.
The S-500 improvises on the interception range with its
ability to engage ballistic missiles at a distance of 600 kilometer with a
capacity to hit at least 10 missiles coming in at a speed of over 7 kilometer
per second.
India deploys K9 Vajra cannons along LAC
Vice Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General C P Mohanty on
Thursday reviewed the prevailing security situation and operational
preparedness of the force in the Union Territory of Ladakh, Defence
Spokesperson Lt Colonel Emron Musavi said.
The Vice Chief of Army Staff visited the headquarters of the
Fire and Fury Corps where he was briefed about the prevailing security
situation and operational preparedness in eastern Ladakh.
The defence spokesperson said that Lt General Mohanty,
accompanied by General Officer Commanding of the Fire and Fury Corps Lt General
P G K Menon, will visit the forward areas in Ladakh on Friday and Saturday and
interact with the troops deployed there.
Indian Army has begun the testing of its all new 155mm/52 calibre
K9 Vajra self propelled howitzers in the terrains of Ladakh.
Built in Gujarat by a joint venture of Larsen & Toubro
and South Korean weapons major Hanwha Defence, the Indian Army has completed
the procurement of 100 such howitzers for a cost of 4,366 crore rupees and has
now deployed three of the units in Ladakh to assess their suitability and
efficacy for deployment in the high altitude region where the temperatures can
fall well below minus 20 degree Celsius.
US Navy conducts first live-fire test of hypersonic missile
motor
The U.S. Navy and its industry team conducted the first
live-fire test of the rocket motor Thursday, which will propel the Navy’s
Conventional Prompt Strike offensive hypersonic missile and the Army’s Long
Range Hypersonic Weapon.
The Navy’s Strategic Systems Programs office tested the
first-stage solid rocket motor, or SRM, in Promontory, Utah. Northrop Grumman
developed the motor and Lockheed Martin serves as the prime weapon systems
integrator to provide boost capability to the two armed services respective
hypersonic strike missile.
“The first stage SRM will be part of a new missile booster
for the services, and will be combined with a Common Hypersonic Glide Body to
create the common hypersonic missile. Each service will use the common
hypersonic missile, while developing individual weapon systems and launchers
tailored for launch from sea or land.
France Likely To Partner India In Developing Six Nuclear Powered
Attack Submarines
Can France be a potential partner in India’s proposed nuclear
powered attack submarine project? According to reliable sources, France has an
edge over the US, UK, and Russia in striking a deal for the joint development
of six submarines for the Indian Navy.
India’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Bipin Rawat, and the
Navy Chief, Admiral Karambir Singh, may have their differences over India
having a third aircraft carrier, but their voice is one in strengthening the
much depleted submarine fleet of the Indian Navy.
India’s Cabinet Committee on Security is all set to give its
nod for the submarine project, particularly when the Indo Pacific has become an
important strategic frontier, with China expanding and consolidating its naval
footprint in the region.
If everything goes well, then France seems to have an edge
over the US, UK, and Russia in striking a deal for the joint development of six
submarines for the Indian Navy.
