Can India built its stealth bomber in near future and what technology do we have to achieve this goal ?
The United States Air force has started work on the development of a very long range, large, heavy-payload stealth intercontinental strategic bomber called B21 Raiders, that will be supplementing a small fleet of a B2 stealth bomber and eventually will be replacing the non-stealthy B1 Lancer bombers from the USAF fleet. People’s Liberation Army Air Force of China on the other hand has leaked enough images of all the things to come that includes a new generation Xian H20 subsonic stealth bomber that eventually makes some wonder why the Indian Air Force has not joined the bandwagon yet.
India’s Combat Vehicles Research and Development
Establishment (DRDO) has started work on developing a 1 ton Stealth Wing Flying
Testbed (SWiFT) that will be the precursor to India’s stealthy Ghatak UCAV
program and also that will be used to demonstrate and prove the stealth
technology and high speed landing technology in autonomous mode before work
starts on the development of 10 ton stealthy Ghatak UCAV that will be powered
by a Dry Kaveri engine generating 46 kiloNewton of Dry Thrust.
SWiFT will be powered by GTRE developed 4.25 kiloNewton
Thrust Turbofan engine called Manik Engine that was designed to power India’s
Nirbhay Cruise missile but now also will be used as a Technology demonstrator
to test many of the basic technologies that are being developed for the bigger
Ghatak UCAV program.
SWiFT itself can turn into a full fledged DRDO’s wingman
Bomber program if IAF desires so, but the focus now seems to be on the HAL’s
proposed CATS Warrior wingman program.
Successful completion of unmanned stealth bomber projects
like SWiFT, Ghataak can lay the foundation for the development of bigger manned
stealth bombers.
Technological challenges to develop such a stealth bomber
won’t be easy but these (SWiFT, Ghatak) projects along with multiple projects
like Tejas M k 2, TEDBF, and AMCA will create the necessary base for the
development of such an aircraft.
Amid Soaring Tensions With China, Taiwan Set To Deploy
Powerful Missile Defense System Sea Sword-II
The homegrown missile system has cleared live-fire trials and
would start deployment soon with the island’s warships. The move is to reduce
its reliance on foreign weapon systems.
China, which claims Taiwan as its territory, has conducted
several military drills in the region. Chinese warplanes have also made a
number of incursions into Taiwan’s air defense zone in the recent past.
The Sea Sword-II SAM is the naval version of the Sky Sword II
radar-guided air-to-air missile designed to arm Taiwan’s F-CK-1 fighter jets.
The missile has reportedly passed all firing tests and evaluations by the
Taiwanese military.
According to Taiwan News, the missile would be deployed on
its new warship, Ta Chiang, a Tuo Chiang Class frigate, by August. The ship is
expected to be handed over to the Navy in July.
The ship’s new multi-targeting capability allows it to
simultaneously engage multiple incoming targets.
It also carries a radar guidance seeker and can effectively
engage targets in electronically contested environments due to its ECM
(electronic countermeasures) capability.
ISRAEL'S ATHOS GUN SYSTEM OR ATMANIRBHAR ATAGS?
Nearly 14 years ago, the Ministry of Defence cleared the
proposal for a towed artillery gun system under the ‘Buy and Make’ category
that was meant to be the backbone of India’s fire assault. A final decision on
this is still awaited.
All eyes are now on the second defence negative import list,
which is expected to be out soon, to see if the 155mm into 52 calibre towed
artillery gun is on it.
A
separate process is also on to get similar guns from the global market and
making them in the country under the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
This
race was primarily between Israel’s Elbit Systems and France’s Nexter, and
Elbit’s Autonomous Towed Howitzer Ordnance System (ATHOS) emerged the winner.
ATHOS
is tailored to the special requirements of the Indian Army and it has invested
tens of millions of dollars in the design and development of the gun in
accordance with Army requirements and in the field trials.
