Rudram-1 Final Trials, LCA Mk2 CDR Accepted, Tedbf Production by 2031, ECWCS, Pak Seeks AUKUS For Nuclear Submarine

DRDO to conduct final trials of Rudram 1

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is preparing for the launch of the new next generation anti-radiation missile also known as Rudram very shortly. It is a tactical, air launched missile that detects enemy radar positions and then seeks and destroys them. This means that the missile fired from an aircraft about 100km from the target will detect it, home on to it, and destroy it. The destruction of radar systems will blind the enemy making it easier for the Indian Air Force to attack other targets.

The next generation anti-radiation missile can be fired from IAF fighters like the Sukhoi-30 and the Mirage 2000. It is accurate and can track a radar system even if it is not operating. It is yet another missile being readied. While several launches have happened, if this launch is successful then it will allow for its serial production, placing it in the arsenal of the armed forces. The launch comes in the wake of the recent successful launches of the strategic long range Agni-P and the tactical surface to surface Pralay missiles.

DRDO hands over extreme cold weather clothing system to five Indian companies

Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman DRDO Doctor G Satheesh Reddy handed over technology for indigenous extreme cold weather clothing system (ECWCS) to 5 Indian companies in New Delhi on December 27, 2021.

The ECWCS is required by Indian Army for its sustained operations in glacier and Himalayan peaks. The Army, till recently has been importing extreme cold weather clothing and several Special Clothing and Mountaineering Equipment items for the troops deployed in high altitude regions.

The DRDO designed ECWCS is an ergonomically designed modular technical clothing with improved thermal insulation and physiological comfort based on the insulation required at various ambient climatic conditions in Himalayan regions during different levels of physical activity.

The ECWCS embodies physiological concepts related to reduction in respiratory heat and water loss, unhindered range of motions and rapid absorption of sweat while providing water proof, wind proof features with adequate breathability and enhanced insulation as well as strength features required for high altitude operations.

The three layered ECWCS is designed to suitably provide thermal insulation over a temperature range of +15 to -50° Celsius with different combinations of the layers and intensity of physical work.

TEDBF Will enter production in 2031: Navy Chief

Admiral R Hari Kumar, Chief of Naval Staff, Indian Navy confirmed that Preliminary Design Review work for the development of the Twin Engine Deck Based Fighter TEDBF has begun at Aeronautical Development Agency with support from the Indian Navy. The Project is being monitored by the Naval Project Office at Bengaluru, which was initially set up to coordinate the LCA Navy project.

Navy Chief confirmed that the aircraft is planned to undertake its first flight by the year 2026 and roll out the production variant by the year 2031. Twin Engine Deck Based Fighter (TEDBF) is a 4.5++ generation deck based fighter jet that is in the same class as Rafale M but heavier by 1.5 tons due to wing folding mechanism and higher take-off weight from carrier.

TED-BF will feature a close coupled canard and a Divertless supersonic inlet air intake with stealth optimized frontal fuselage section and wider cockpit area for carrier based landings. TEDBF will be powered by Two GE-F414IN engines that will be later replaced by an Indigenous 110 kiloNewton Class engine to be developed for the AMCA Program.

TEDBF design can be further optimized to carry 5th generation fighter technology once in enters production. TEDBF will start replacing MiG-29K from 2034 onwards from the Indian Navy.

Tejas Mk2: IAF Accepts Critical Design Review

Following the successful completion of the preliminary design review stage last year, the Tejas Mk2 programs design team had completed the critical design review phase and the project achieved a major landmark and many might have, breathe a sigh of relief when on November 15, Deputy Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Narmdeshwar Tiwari accepted the comprehensive design review of the Tejas Mk2.

Critical design review acceptance will pave way for the fabrication of the two pre-production Tejas Mk2 aircraft first of which will be rolled out by end of 2022 and after conclusions of Low and High Speed Taxi Trials, the first flight of the same will be concluded by end of 2023.

Aeronautical Development Agency is trying to showcase the first aircraft at Aero India 2023 that is to be held at Air Force Station, Yelahanka, Bengaluru in February after its rollout in December 2022. The current Air Chief Marshal Vivek Ram Chaudhari has been avoiding talking about the Tejas Mk2 program since taking the chair that has been causing speculations if the program is dead on arrival as IAF has no intention to place orders for the jets but acceptance of the CDR by IAF might come as a booster to the program.

Pakistan sees AUKUS as opportunity to seek Nuclear Submarines to level with India

National Institute of Maritime Affairs (NIMA) has called for Pakistan to take advantage of the AUKAS deal and use this as a pretext to build nuclear submarines with the help of her friendly allies to maintain strategic balance in the Indian Ocean.

The Paper called on China that has nuclear technology to help other Indo Pacific countries such as Pakistan to build nuclear submarines to counter QUAD and AUKAS in the Indian Ocean Region.

Think tank also warned that Delhi has plans for nuclear attack submarines equipped with anti-ship torpedoes and cruise missiles and Pakistan not to be left behind should immediately should seek technological collaboration with China to get its hands on nuclear submarines.

Pakistan Navy is getting eight Type-039B ‘Hangor Class’ submarines as part of Chinese aid that will be a major boost to the Pakistan Navy. Type-039B will be 76 meters long and have a displacement of 2800 tons, making them slightly bigger than India’s Kalvari Class submarines. Type-039B will be outfitted with Babur-3 SLCMs that can be equipped with tactical nuclear warhead and act as a second strike platform for the Pakistani military and also for deep conventional capability strikes inside India.
