Russia Exits From Project P75I, K10 ARV For Vajra Tank, Sukhoi-30SM2 Upgrades, Army To Patent ‘Asmi Gun’

300 K9 Vajra-T is OK But Where is K10 Ammunition Resupply Vehicle

The Indian Army currently operates five numbers of K9 Vajra T 155mm/52 caliber Self Propelled Howitzer regiments. Each regiment is equipped with 18 guns and two reserve units totalling 100 guns. These guns were acquired by the Army under the initial contract signed with joint venture of South Korean defense company Hanwa Defense and L&T in May 2017. The contract to deliver 100 K9 Vajra-T worth Rs 4,500 crore was signed for delivery to the army by 2022. L&T which built these Self Propelled Howitzers at the Hazira, Gujarat plant delivered them before time with Indian Army receiving the 100th cannon in February 2021.

The guns were acquired ostensibly for use in Punjab’s plains and Rajasthan’s semi desert terrain along the Pakistan India international border. Impressed by the performance talks were on to procure 40 more of such Howitzers for Indian Army. What happened to that contract no one knows for sure. In the meantime, skirmish with China started along the LAC in eastern Ladakh and Indian Army decided to field these Self Propelled Howitzers in Ladakh.

Following the successful trials of three K9 Vajra, which were sent to Ladakh, Indian Army decided to procure at least two more regiments of these Self Propelled Howitzers that are to be deployed in the high altitude areas. This after engineers from L&T upgraded the Self Propelled Howitzer to optimize them for operations in Eastern Ladakh. The optimization included changes in range tables and software that guided these guns to operate in the mountainous terrain, as well as special kits to function smoothly in cold temperatures.

As Indian Army decided to field these Self Propelled Howitzers, all along the Line of Actual Control with China, especially in entire Eastern Ladakh sector and Sikkim, instead of Two regiments of 40 Self Propelled Howitzers, a new deal for 200 new K9 Vajra or 10 new regiments worth over Rs 10,000 crore is being floated. The new deal could well be signed at Defence Expo 2022, to be held at Gandhinagar, Gujarat, from March 10 to 13, 2022. All this is fine but where is the K10 Automatic Resupply Vehicle?, K10 based on K9 platform is the resupply vehicle that follows the K9 Self Propelled Howitzers.

K10 sharing most of the components and characteristics with K9, and has a high level of protection which is the same as that of K9. The resupply vehicle with a combat weight of 47 tons can support a team of K9 by carrying and resupplying 104 shells of 155mm /52 calibre artillery ammunition and 504 units of charges under heavy fire. The K10 vehicle is operated by 3 crews, that requires only one loader by applying fully automated control system, it transfers ammunition at a maximum speed of 12 rounds per minutes. K10 takes 37 minutes to fully load, and 28 minutes to empty.

Russia Pulls out of Indian Navy’s Project-75I tender after AIP technology hurdle

Russia has said that it will not take part in the Indian Navy’s ongoing procurement plan for new submarines, confirming that the Indian government has been formally notified of the decision. The Rupees 43,000 crore plan to acquire six new submarines under Project 75I has also hit delays early in the process, with other foreign contenders and Indian partners seeking additional time to formulate their proposals.

The Russian side has offered India upgraded Kilo class submarines – the type that forms the bulk of the current conventional fleet – but has decided to withdraw from the contest citing technical reasons. The Russian side has previously confirmed its interest in participation in this programme and suggested a platform based on the design of Project-677E submarine Amur-1650. However, after receiving and studying the Request For Proposal RFP finalising terms and conditions of the tender, the Russian side has decided not to participate in the tender for technical reasons.

As reported earlier, the German side, too, has written to the government citing inability to take part in the contest due to technical reasons, including liability clauses and an inadequate budgetary allocation.

Indian Airforce Eyes Sukhoi Fighter Upgrades

Commencement of shipments of the improved Sukhoi-30SM2 multirole fighters to the Russian Air and Space Force, might prompt India to upgrade their aging fleets of the Sukhoi-30MKM and Sukhoi-30MKI respectively. The Sukhoi-30SM2 is the latest variant of the initial twin seat Sukhoi-30.

The Sukhoi-30SM2 differs in its use of more powerful AL-41F1 turbofans in place of the AL-31FP. SM2 version differs in its reshaped nose cone to house a larger radar, special edition of the N035 Irbis. M2 jets super manoeuvrability is achieved through vectored thrust. More importantly, the model can out manoeuvre an enemy fighter and evade radar guided missiles.

India has ordered a total of 284 Sukhoi-30MKI Jets, of which 240 remain operational, including a recent batch of 12 last year, which now needs upgradation.

The Indian Army’s ‘General Kalashnikov’ gives it a new 9mm sub machine gun

An army officer has designed and produced the first prototypes of a compact 9mm sub machine gun. The ‘Aasmi’ (pride), as it is called, was designed by Lieutenant Colonel Prasad Bansod of the army’s Mhow based Infantry school.

The prototype weapon was produced in just four months in collaboration with the DRDO’s Pune based Armament Research and Development Establishment. The weapon was tested by firing over 300 rounds each. A smaller, sub compact version of the weapon weighing less than 1.5 kilogram is in development.

The weapon operates on a simple blowback principle, has a 33 round high capacity magazine, a range of 100 metres and a rate of fire of 600 rounds per minute. It has an 8 inch barrel and an upper, made of aircraft aluminium and a lower made of carbon fibre. The Indian Army is to file a patent for the weapon and is looking for a production partner to mass produce the weapon.
