India & Israel inked deal to develop next generation drones, robotics

In reflection of their growing defence ties, India and Israel on Tuesday sealed an agreement to jointly develop next generation technologies and products such as drones, robotics, artificial intelligence and quantum computing.

The Bilateral Innovation Agreement was firmed up between Defence Research and Development Organisation and Israel’s Directorate of Defence Research and Development. The pact will provide for promoting innovation as well as research and development to develop dual use technologies.

India is a major buyer of Israel’s military hardware. Israel has been supplying various weapon systems, missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles to India over the last few years but the transactions have largely remained behind the curtains.

HAL’s new Tumakuru plant to have key role in building Light Utility Helicopter

The new helicopter manufacturing facility of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited at Tumakuru is expected to start operations by March 2022. The facility will play a significant role in HAL’s helicopter manufacturing strategy, particularly in relation to the Light Utility Helicopter (LUH).

Initially, the Tumakuru helicopter facility will have the capacity to produce 30 helicopters annually. Experts point out that together HAL’s Tumakuru and Bengaluru helicopter facilities will be able to roll out 100 Light Utility Helicopters every year. Light Utility Helicopters test flights will also be carried out from HAL’s Tumakuru facility. Interestingly, the role of the Tumakuru helicopter facility assumed further significance after the ministry of defence approved the procurement of 12 Light Utility Helicopters from HAL (six each for the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force).

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited Collaborating with ZeroAvia to Develop Hydrogen Powertrain for Dornier-228 Zero Emission Aircraft

ZeroAvia, the leading innovator in zero emission aviation, has announced a development collaboration with the Indian state owned aerospace & defence company Hindustan Aeronautics Limited HAL for a hydrogen electric powertrain capable of flying the 19 seat Dornier-228 aircraft up to 500 Nautical Miles.

HAL intends to work with ZeroAvia to develop a Supplemental Type Certificate to allow retrofit of existing airframes for both Indian military and worldwide operators. HAL also intends to continue to build new aircraft with additional FAA approval, designated Hindustan-228, creating the opportunity to incorporate ZeroAvia’s ZA600 zero emission engines.

Additionally, HAL and ZeroAvia engineers will integrate ZeroAvia’s ZA600 hydrogen electric powertrain into the Dornier-228 airframe. ZeroAvia will work closely with HAL and aircraft regulators during this project to ensure that aircraft meets both safety and operational requirements.

At $4 Billion Per Warship, US Navy’s ‘White Elephant’ To Be Turned Into Hypersonic Missile Launch Platform

Maritime warfare is quickly occupying the center stage in the great power game. Amid this, the US has revealed its plans to convert the Zumwalt class destroyers into highly advanced missile launch platforms by 2025.

The Intermediate Range Conventional Prompt Strike hypersonic weapons planned for these destroyers are set to replace the 155mm Advanced Gun Systems that stealthy ships are currently equipped with.

Hypersonic weapons serve as an ideal choice for penetrating through even the thickest, most advanced air and missile defenses. They can strike high value as well as prospective time sensitive targets.
