Rafale-M demonstrates Maximum Takeoff Weight from shore based test facility in Goa

French Navy owned Rafale-M which is in INS Hansa in Goa for the last two weeks to carry out flight testing at the shore based test facility has successfully demonstrated maximum take-off with 4 MBDA MICA IR/ EM Missiles, Two 2300 L-Drop tanks, and 1 Exocet AM39 anti-ship missile. If results are found satisfactory next round of trials might take place onboard INS Vikramaditya, where it will not only able to demonstrate regular takeoffs and landing but also take down to hangar using lifts and perform engine swapping.

Boeing recommenced its F-18 Super Hornets trials on the ski jump facility in the states and similar trials will likely begin in March at shore based test facility in Goa. Indian Navy needed 57 deck based fighters for its carrier operations. But the figure is being revised to just 27 now. Indian Navy operates 42 Mig-29K Carrier based fighter jets but it has plans to replace them by 2035 with TEDBF that aeronautical development agency along with HAL is developing.

The Navy has put forward TEDBF requirement for 100 units for which ADA has asked Ministry of Defence for sanction of 13000 crores. TEDBF is still at the preliminary design review stage and its expected critical design review will be completed by 2024 and the first flight by end of 2026 with production starting in 2031.

China may sell its hypersonic weapons to Pakistan for countering Indian S400

The Indian Air Force is working to deploy its brand new S400 air defence system, acquired from Russia. The first Indian S400 unit would be operational in April and would be deployed in depth areas to tackle the threat from China.

The Indian Air Force has previously described the S400 as a ‘game changer’ given the air defence systems advanced sensors and array of missiles. The S400 uses four types of surface to air missiles with ranges from 40km to 400km. The missiles can shoot down multiple types of targets such as aircraft, cruise missiles, bombs and some types of ballistic missiles. The versatility of the S400 has meant that Pakistan has considered its acquisition by India as a threat, as the system can shoot down aircraft even in Pakistani airspace.

Seeing that Beijing could allow Pakistan access to hypersonic weapons to counter the S400. Hypersonic weapons which fly at over five times the speed of sound are difficult for most radars to track and existing surface to air missiles to engage. China will assist Pakistan with Hypersonic Glide Vehicle, or simply sell the DF-17.

A hypersonic glide vehicle is a type of hypersonic weapon that is mounted on a ballistic missile and released in the upper atmosphere, after which it glides to its target. DF-17 has a range of around 2,500km and moves at between five and 10 times the speed of sound. Pakistani analysts have previously argued in favour of developing hypersonic weapons to counter the deployment of the S400.

Induction Of Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System Very Soon

DRDO said India has the world’s longest Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System with a range of more than 48 kilometers. Final trials were being conducted and very soon it would be inducted into the armed forces.

India’s first indigenously built Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (Atags) comes with automated ammunition handling facility. The 155mm and 52 calibre howitzer is the world’s longest range gun system in its class.

Atags comes with six round automated magazine capable of firing in 30 seconds. The existing 155mm and 52 calibre guns have standard three round magazine. Since the magazines need to be loaded manually, it leads to casualties during the exercise.

The project was taken up in 2013 to replace older guns in service with modern 155mm artillery gun. Configured with an all-electric drive the hydro lateral gun has a maximum firing range of 48km and can be deployed in less than three minutes.

Indian Army to procure 200 more K9 Vajra

K9 Vajra weighs 50 tons and can fire shells out to over 50 kilometres. Larsen and Toubro had delivered 100 K9 Vajra tanks for Rs 4,500 crore in partnership with South Korean defence firm Hanwha Defense. The contract was signed in May 2017 and the 100th gun delivered to the army on February 2021. It remains the largest Make in India programmes signed and completed on this government’s watch. It is also the fastest way for the army to acquire modern artillery systems.

A new order, which could be placed by this year, will see the guns start to roll out of Hazira by 2023 with all deliveries completed before 2028. A large number of these guns will be specially modified with uprated engines to operate in the high-altitude cold deserts of Ladakh and Sikkim.

S400 to get its own Additional ADS Cover

Deliberations are been held to provide additional air defense cover to such a forward airbase that doesn’t require the S400 system to engage expensive missile system to defend against low-cost saturation attacks.

Akash Mk1 & Mk2 both have showcased amazing ability to take down subsonic cruise missiles, Precision Guided Munitions, Armed UAVs as close as 200 meters from their launchers that might now provide inner ring security cover to the S400 and airbase systems against such aerial weapons while S400 will be used to take out air launch platforms at long range.

Additional deployment of ADS will solidify inner air defence cover to the base and all important installation near its vicinity.
