Indian Navy might finally get its Black Shark heavyweight torpedoes
Indian Navy had to float a fresh tender to acquire around 100 heavyweight torpedoes to be armed on the Scorpene class conventional and Arihant class nuclear submarines after Black Shark torpedoes belonging to the Italian firm WASS which was part of the scam tainted Finmeccanica group in the Agusta Westland chopper scam that was previously selected was blacklisted by the Indian Ministry of Defence.
Due to the ban on the Italian firm Leonardo, Four Scorpene class
conventional and 2 Arihant classes had to be only armed with tube launched anti-ship
missiles as they still wait for procurement of heavyweight torpedoes, exposing
major deficiencies in the combat capabilities of these ships.
Responding to the Indian Navy’s tender issued last year,
German Atlas Elektronik company offered its Sea Hake mod4 heavyweight torpedoes
and French Naval Group its F-21 Heavy Weight Torpedo to the Indian Navy. Adaption
of new heavyweight torpedoes also requires upgradation of the software and
hardware of the weapons control system in each ship that is one of the possible
reasons why the Navy waited for a while before it floated tenders for Heavy
Weight Torpedo with the lifting of the ban on Leonardo.

DRDO Tata WhAp might finally see the Production floor
Jointly Developed by TATA Defence Research and Development
Organisation with the support of UK based defense firm Supaacat. Last seen in
2020 carrying high altitude trials along the Line of Actual Control. India’s
very own Wheeled infantry combat vehicle might finally enter production as Army
Owned Whap that has travelled length and breadth of the country in various
trials over the years, finally seems to have impressed Top Generals In the Army
who are a bit hard to impress when it comes to indigenous products.
Whap is pegged at 23 crores per unit cost that is 30-50%
Cheaper than Western Infantry Carrier Vehicle in its segment but also gives the
option to the user to be adapted for different requirements and various
configurations as proposed by the TATA.
The Indian Army earlier this year had issued a Request For
Information for the procurement of 1,750 Futuristic Infantry Combat Vehicles in
a phased manner to replace the 1980s vintage Russian origin BMP-2 infantry
vehicles in service. As the formal induction of the system into the Army is not
expected before the 2028-30 period thus creating some opportunity for small scale
production of the DRDO Tata Whap even though it is participating in the tender
process with its bids.
Army wants new radar for threat detection along China border
The Indian Army has sought to equip itself with a modern low level
light weight radar for threat detection and response along the China border
where surveillance is restricted due to mountainous terrain.
The terrain provides easy ingress to enemy aircraft, helicopters
and unmanned aerial vehicles flying at low altitudes. The radar figures on a
new list of Make in India projects that the army plans to pursue in partnership
with the industry.
The list, released by army chief General Manoj Mukund
Naravane on Monday, includes surveillance and armed drone swarm, counter drone
systems, infantry weapon training simulator, robotic surveillance platforms,
portable helipads and a variety of ammunition.
The army wants a 3D active electronically scanned array radar
that has a range of 50km with tactical control of air defence weapons. The low level
light weight radar is among the weapons and systems that cannot be imported. The
radar is required for the northern and eastern borders with China whose army
has ramped up military activities in both sectors.
Chinese PLA Practices Sinking US Ford Class Aircraft Carrier
With DF-21D Ballistic Missile
China has been demonstrating its ability to strike “enemy
aircraft carriers” as part of its psychological warfare strategy against the US
military for the past few years. So much so that it has been practicing
simulated multi wave ballistic missile strikes on a regular basis.
The Chinese PLA has launched precision strikes at “target
ships” with DF 21D missiles making them completely useless. These anti-ship ballistic
missiles ASBMs in China’s inventory can cover most of the Western Pacific,
where US carriers are frequently stationed.
With tensions rising between the two countries, China has
created mockups of a US Navy aircraft carrier and destroyer in its northwest
desert, in preparation for a future naval battle
