NASA To Launch First Ever Inter Planetary Defense Mission, Aims To Thwart Asteroid Attacks On Earth
US space agency NASA has launched several spacecraft into the solar system, but its upcoming mission will attempt a one of its kind feat to target an asteroid. The objective is to demonstrate the feasibility of using an interceptor to divert asteroids that could potentially collide with Earth.
On November 24, NASA will launch the first spacecraft
designed to collide with the asteroid and help test the technologies preventing
space collisions. The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission is set to
hit the smaller asteroid of the two-asteroid system Didymos and change its
trajectory through kinetic impact.
The diameter of the smaller asteroid, known as Dimporphos, is
about 160 meters (530 feet) while the larger is about 780 meters, they pose no
threat to Earth. The size of the DART is hundreds of times smaller than
Dimorphos and will hit it at the speed of 24,000 kilometers per hour (14,900
miles per hour).
However, the collision is planned not to fully destroy the
asteroid, but to slightly change its orbit, within one degree.

India Issues fresh NOTAM, Likely test of Surface To Surface BrahMos
India has issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) notification for
a surface to surface missile launch at the Andaman & Nicobar Islands for
the period from 23 to 25 November 2021.
Danger Zone mentioned is similar to what was notified last
year for the land attack version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile that
was tested in islands. Same area was notified from 26 to 28 Oct 2021 but no
missile was tested.
Indian Army along with the Defence Research and Development
Organisation developed Missile system has been testing and validating BrahMos
supersonic cruise missiles with an extended range of 450 kilometer in the last
few years and it seems to the ongoing trial of the Land and Anti ship version
of the BrahMos that has seen range extended from 390 kilometer to 450 kilometers.
Last year Indian Navy from INS Chennai and Indian Airforce from Sukhoi-30 MKI
had tested BrahMos supersonic cruise missile variants in the same areas.
DARPA nabs Gremlin drone in midair for first time
For the first time, the Defense Advanced Research Projects
Agency recovered an unmanned X-61 Gremlin air vehicle to C-130 Aircraft in
flight, marking a milestone in the US military’s effort to deploy swarms of
drones from a mothership.
The first successful mid-air Gremlin recovery took place October
29 at Dugway Proving Ground in Utah. The agency noted that this flight test,
the fourth deployment of the Gremlins, involved two of the small drones, which
successfully carried out all formation flying positions and safety features.
While one Gremlin was recovered, the second was destroyed during the flight
tests, DARPA said.
The Gremlins team then refurbished the recovered drone and
flew it again within 24 working hours. DARPA hopes the program will one day
allow the military to launch groups of small sensor fitted drones from bombers,
cargo planes or smaller aircraft such as fighters.
DARPA envisions the motherships will stay out of range of
enemy defenses, but the drone swarms would fly into danger and conduct missions
such as intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance or electronic warfare. After
the mothership collects the drones and brings them back to base, ground crews
would get them ready for another flight within 24 hours.
The agency hopes each drone would have a lifetime of 20 flights. The agency said flying these relatively disposable drones would allow the military to accomplish missions much more cheaply and with less maintenance efforts than relying on non-expendable systems meant to fly for decades.
