Reactor vessel for Kudankulam 5 takes shape

The Volgodonsk branch of AEM Technologies has started assembling the upper part of the reactor pressure vessel for unit 5 of the Kudankulam nuclear power plant under construction in India. Two Russian designed pressurised water reactors are being built as the third phase of the plant in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.

AEM Technologies said specialists have connected two shells of the branch pipe zone. A flange is also to be installed. After installing all the elements, the component will be moved to the welding stand with the help of a crane, where welding of two circumferential seams will begin.

Units 1 and 2 of the Kudankulam plant began commercial operations in 2014 and 2017, respectively. Construction of units 3 and 4 began in 2017 and those units are now around 50% complete. Units 5 and 6 are scheduled to be completed by 2027. There are also plans for a fourth phase of the plant – units 7 and 8 with larger reactors.

Indian Navy strengthens Anti-Submarine capabilities

India has signed an agreement with the US to acquire MK-54 lightweight torpedoes to be fitted on P8I MPA aircraft. To increase its anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare capabilities, India is investing heavily in the procurement of advanced airborne platforms such as Boeing P8I Multi Mission Maritime Patrol Aircraft and MH-60R Seahawk maritime helicopters.

These acquisitions are expected to drive the procurement of several cutting-edge weapon systems, including torpedoes, anti ship and land attack missiles. Additionally, the sale of MK-54 torpedoes will provide the Indian Navy the ability to strike Chinese threats in the Indian Ocean.

After J-20, China’s J-21 Carrier Capable Stealth Fighter Aircraft Gets Ready To Challenge US F-35 Jets

China has been aggressively ramping up its Navy including fighter jets that would operate from its aircraft carriers. Recently, the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy tested a new carrier capable stealth aircraft and experts believe they could be a powerful addition to Chinese Navy.

Although details remain shrouded in secrecy, it is believed that the aircraft is a derivative of the FC-31 or J-31. Experts have speculated that it could be called J-21 or the J-35.

Carrier capable J-31 is a major upgrade from its predecessors. Some core features identified are the far larger and more robust pair of wheels to support the stresses of carrier operations, a catapult launch bar, a clear indication of the aircraft’s carrier landing capabilities. The folding wingtips and tail tips are also indicative of its carrier operations.

This aircraft carrier is likely to be ready by 2022 and enter operational service by 2024.

What is ISRO’s ‘Solar Power Calculator’ that is to be offered to the world?

ISRO has demonstrated the strategy of figuring out one of the best suited places for putting in upcoming solar energy era farms, throughout the globe.

It is about using satellite data and identifying potential areas where maximum solar energy is available per year, across the globe. Isro will be collecting this data, analysing, mapping it and sharing it online and via a mobile application. Mapping this data and sharing it would help countries decide their upcoming solar power projects.

ISRO was additionally creating some {hardware} for this function, It is a very useful tool for installation of PV solar panels for tapping solar energy.
