US Tests Its Powerful Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System, Target Intercepted
The US Missile Defense Agency, in cooperation with the US Navy, conducted Flight Test Aegis Weapon System 33 in the broad ocean area northwest of Hawaii, July 24.
The objective was to intercept two short range
ballistic missile targets using four Standard Missile 6 Dual II missiles.
Based on initial observations, one target was
successfully intercepted.
These were the most complex exercises of this
kind to date, using two test targets and a ship (the USS Ralph Johnson)
equipped with the Aegis missile defense system. It was the third flight test of
an Aegis equipped vessel using the SM6 Dual-II missile.
Russian tech firm to develop drone with 1 tonne
lifting capacity
The Russian Helicopters Group plans to develop
drones with a lifting capacity of 200 kilograms and 1 tonne.
Today the existing Russian drones have a
lifting capacity of 50 kilograms (the BAS-200) and 70-80 kilograms (VRT-300).
The BAS-200 is an unmanned rotorcraft with a
maximum takeoff weight of 200 kilograms. The drone is 3.9 metre long and 1.2 metre
high, can develop a speed of 160 kilometers/hour, carry a payload of up to 50 kilograms,
climb to an altitude of 3,900 meters and operate for four hours.
The BAS-200 is designated to monitor the
terrain, deliver cargo, carry out search and rescue and agricultural
operations. The project is being developed by the Mil and Kamov National
Helicopter. The BAS-200 drone has been featured at the MAKS-2021 international
air show for the first time.
Boeing To Upgrade Its Apache Helicopters To The
Most Advanced ‘Indian Variant’ In Asia-Pacific Region
The Indian Air Force uses the AH-64E, the most
advanced variant of the Apache attack helicopter. Among other features, the ‘E’
variant has the capability to control unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which
could be a game-changer in future operations.
The AH-64E”, Apache is designed and equipped
with an open systems architecture including the latest communications,
navigation, sensor, and weapon systems. It has an improved Modernized Target
Acquisition Designation System that provides day-night and all-weather target
information, as well as night vision navigation capability.
It is a versatile rotorcraft, capable of
conducting reconnaissance, security, peacekeeping operations, and lethal
attack, across myriad environments without reconfiguration.
In the E variant, the Apache’s performance is
improved via the more powerful GE Aviation T700-701D engines.
Other upgrades include enhanced avionics,
advanced digital connectivity, and a cognitive decision aiding system.
HMS Queen Elizabeth flaunts
MT30 turbines for India’s future carrier
A carrier strike group from the Royal Navy, led
by the aircraft carrier, HMS Queen Elizabeth, transited through the Suez Canal
and entered the Indian Ocean on Friday. It is heading for the South China Sea
on its first operational tour of contested waters.
En route to the Western Pacific, and also while
returning to the UK in October, the carrier strike group will exercise with the
Indian Navy, which it considers a key defence partner in the Indian Ocean
Region. The UK is deploying the carrier strike group to Asia is to demonstrate
the “Indo-Pacific tilt” in London’s security policy.
But London has an important commercial aim as
well: To persuade the Indian Navy to buy the Queen Elizabeth Rolls-Royce
propulsion system for India’s second indigenous aircraft carrier (IAC-2), which
is tentatively named INS Vishal.
With nuclear propulsion ruled out for IAC-2
(developing a “marinized” reactor will take too long), the Royal Navy says the Queen
Elizabeth full integrated electric propulsion system, based on Rolls-Royce’s
Marine 36MW MT30 gas turbines, would be the ideal alternative. The Indian and
UK carriers are similar, with both displacing 65,000 tonnes.
Derby cleared for Captive flight trials on Sukhoi-30
India’s Airforce took a crucial step forward
recently and cleared its Sukhoi-30 MKI fleet to be armed with Israeli Derby ER
Beyond Visual Air to Air missile for which one of the Sukhoi-30MKI was used to
carry out series of aeromechanical integrity tests, mechanical, structural, and
electrical compatibility tests between the missile and the aircraft, and
whether vibrations, strain, stress, etc can be handled by the aircraft.
In Phase-I of the Captive flight, trials will
involve the Sukhoi-30MKI carrying under its wings at one of its six hardpoints
a Dummy Derby-ER missiles for multiple 90 minute sorties each, that covers the
entire flight envelope of the aircraft.
Phase-II will be followed with the actual
missile being used in Captive flight minus its warhead and at last, the missile
release mechanism will be tested before it is cleared to be fired from an
aircraft.
