Tejas MK1B, MK2 or AMCA?, Trentar UAV In India, Gaganyaan Crew Module Delivered, Sagar Shakti Military Exercise In Kutch

Will it be Tejas Mk1B over Tejas Mk2 ?

A great deal of hue and cry was made when new Air Chief Marshal Vivek Ram Chaudhary stopped talking about the Tejas Mk2 jet in this recent media interaction and it now seems it was not a simple act of omission but deliberate. Tejas Mk2 cleared critical design review that allows HAL to start fabrication of the first aircraft that HAL Chief had said will be ready by end of 2022 and have its first flight by end of 2023.

Debate has started within IAF on how to go about in the development of future locally made fighter jets and whether India should jump from the Tejas Mark-1A directly to the AMCA. IAF earlier in February at Aero India 2021 had placed orders for 83 Tejas MK1A and transition directly to AMCA will mean a critical gap in combat squadron fleet will continue if the Mk2 program is not cleared for production.

An enhanced variant of the Tejas MK1A should be considered that possibly reduce the cost of setting up of a new production line but can accommodate most of the technologies that were developed for the Mk2 program as an improved variant.

Sagar Shakti Mega Military Exercise In Kutch To Test Combat Readiness

India’s combat capability and readiness to confront any multidimensional security threat was elaborately tested at a four day mega military exercise conducted in the Creek sector of the Kutch peninsula. The Sagar Shakti exercise held from November 19 to 22 witnessed participation of the Indian Army, Indian Navy, Indian Airforce, Indian Coast Guard, Border Security Force, Gujarat Police and the Marine Police.

The high intensity exercise was organised by the Indian Army’s Southern Command and its primary aim was to test the combat readiness of the agencies in a real time scenario. The exercise involved the insertion of troops and complex manoeuvres by the forces in dealing with any possible security challenges in land, water and air simultaneously in an integrated manner.

Comprehensive coordination incorporating contemporary technology to include response mechanism in a multi domain environment, real time communication, and sharing of operational data to overcome emerging multi-dimensional threats were practised and honed.

The exercise was witnessed by the senior hierarchy of participating agencies. This is the first time that an effective punch of a field training exercise has been packed in the response mechanism which functions under a robust Central Operation Room comprising troops of multiple forces.

The participating organisations deployed key assets in the exercise to simulate ways to combat various threats that India may face. The exercise comes at a time India has bolstered its maritime combat capability in view of evolving security scenarios in the Indian Ocean Region. The Indian Ocean, considered the backyard of the Indian Navy is critical for India’s strategic interests. China has been making concerted efforts to increase its presence in the region. The Indian Navy has been ramping up its presence in the Indian Ocean to keep a hawk-eyed vigil over Chinese activities.
