Rafale Upgrades By 2022, Chinese UAVs Crash Problem, VL-SRSAM Replace Barak-1, S500 Formally Offered, INS Visakhapatnam Inducted

Development of IAF’s Truck Mounted VL-SRSAM gets underway

Vertically Launched Short Range Surface to Air Missile ( VL-SRSAM ) that was tested only at the start of this year for the first time to be mounted on the future Indian Navy warships to provide point air defense to the ship and its crew and replace aging Barak-1 Point Air Defense Missiles acquired from Israel will see Indian Air Force variant that will be Truck mounted on the 4 into 4 light utility Military truck for easy mobility.

Trial of the IAF variant of the VL-SRSAM from a 4 Canisterised Mobile launcher system that will enable a 360° Vertical launch system has been fabricated and mounted on a Truck. VL-SRSAM can provide air defense coverage against a wide spectrum of threats such as attack aircraft, helicopters, UAVs, Subsonic cruise missiles, and standoff weapons.

VL-SRSAM is an Astra MK1 Beyond Visual range air to air missile that has been modified to be adapted for air defense roles and has a range of 40 kilometers. VL-SRSAM will compliment LRSAM in Naval Warships and complement Spyder and Akash Mk1 Air defense systems in the Indian Air Force.

India formally to be offered S500 missile system?

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India next month for an annual summit and is expected to coincide with the delivery of the first S400 system that has started to arrive in the country but Russians are likely to also make a formal offer to India on the export of S500 system that the country already has developed and shown interest in supplying it to both China and India.

The S500 system is not seen as a step up over the S400 system but rather interesting addition to its capabilities that boost of its capabilities to tackle Hypersonic glide and cruise missiles that the S400 system can’t tackle.

Present S400 customers will be interested in the capabilities of S500 that only arguments capabilities of the air defense system that they already possess said Russian media recently and India and China are first to be offered since both countries have brought this system. China might be the first to grab this offer but Russians are keen that India makes the first move.

Chinese Made UAVs take world by Storm but they keep crashing

Chinese drones have proven cost effective alternatives to American UAVs, others have pointed out the drones high crash rates and reliability issues when compared to their Israeli, US and Turkish counterparts.

Trading in reliability for a low acquisition price could ultimately prove more expensive than acquiring a reliable unmanned aerial platform from the get go. If the reliability of the Wing Loong II and TB2 were exactly the same, then a Wing Loong II costs around three times as much as a TB2.

But if we assume, for the sake of argument, that the reliability of the Wing Loong II is only half that of the TB2, then it becomes six times as expensive considering the costs of replacing losses. The crash rate of the TB2 is reported to be one every 30000 flight hours, which ultimately translates to some 166 dollars per operating hour. while crash rate of the Wing Loong II is double of this figure (one in every 15000 flight hours)

Air Force To Start Upgrading Rafale Fighter Fleet From January 2022

Having already received around 30 Rafale combat aircraft from France, the Indian Air Force would start upgrading its fleet of French origin fighters from January 2022, with India specific enhancements. A high level team of Indian Air Force officers is in France to evaluate the performance of the testbed aircraft with tail number RB-008 at the Istres airbase there. The aircraft has been equipped with all the India Specific Enhancements agreed upon between the two sides in the 2016 contract.

Once the enhancements are approved and accepted by the IAF, the upgrade is planned to be started from January next year onwards making the Indian planes more capable. The India specific enhancements would include integration of highly capable missiles, low band jammers and satellite communication systems as per Indian requirements.

The upgrade of the aircraft would be carried out at the Ambala Air Force Station which is the first base of the plane in the country.
