After ignoring local Tanks ,Now Army wants to buy Israel artillery’s, again ignoring local options
Delay in an indigenous gun-making programme and the unpredictable situation on the China front has injected fresh concern despite recent inductions like the K9 Vajra mobile artillery systems, internal assessments have flagged off a capability gap in the short term, given the slow pace of deliveries by the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) of the self developed Dhanush towed artillery guns and the incomplete trials of the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAG).
While imports are the last option, army is considering a
proposal for fast delivery of 400 guns under a project that has remained
stalled since 2019, with the winning bidder Elbit Systems offering over 70%
indigenous content and setting up production facilities in India.
Army has received a proposal to drastically shorten the
delivery period of the guns as well, with the first six promised to be
delivered within 10 months of signing a contract and the complete set of 400
guns to be in service by 2025.
The Israeli company had been shortlisted as the lowest bidder
in an international competition in 2019 after undergoing extensive tests by the
army. However, the contract has not moved ahead for almost two years as India
has been considering the ATAGs programme as well.
Internal notes reveal that the gun has been offered at under
10 crore a piece, against the projected 18 crore price for ATAGs and would be
fully produced in India, with Elbit promising complete transfer of technology
free of cost to its domestic partners.
Deadly Romeo Helicopters Coming To India Soon
The first three out 24 MH-60R Seahawks are expected to be
delivered next month. Dates are in the process of being confirmed for
delivering the helicopters to the Indian Mission in the US. After which they
will be sent to India.
The pilots and ground crew from the Indian Navy are already
in the US undergoing training. They will return with the new MH-60Rs. For the balance
of the helicopters, the delivery will be as per the timeline stated in the
contract inked between the governments of India and US. The 24 helicopters are
coming through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) route and are for approximately
USD 2.6 billion. These helicopters are going to help the Indian Navy play a
critical role in the Indian Ocean Region.
These helicopters are going to be loaded with torpedoes and
missiles and these missiles are going to be used in anti-submarine roles. These
helicopters will replace the British Sea King helicopters.
The Defence Acquisition Council had put its stamp of approval
in 2018. Eye in the Sky MH-60Rs `Romeos’ helicopters when combined with the
already being operated Boeing’s P8-I by the Indian Navy will help submarine
hunting grow stronger when combined with these helicopters.
And soon the Indian Navy will be getting Sea Guardian Drones
from the US based General Atomics.
Bharat Forge To Set UP New Factory For Defence Business, To
Acquire Land For Rs 240 Crore
Bharat Forge is looking to acquire 175 acres in an industrial
park near Pune for Rs 240 crore which will house new factories for its defence
and electric mobility business divisions.
These new assets which will come up at Khed City, will
manufacture speciality vehicles, certain systems and aggregates that go into
artillery guns and an assembly plant which will also house a testing facility.
Khed City is a joint venture between the Kalyani Group and
the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation and the facility is expected
to be operational in the next 2-3 years.
They are setting up the facility of three products. One is
going to be specialty vehicles, second will be certain systems and aggregates
that go into a variety of products and third will be assembly plant and testing
facility for both vehicles and other systems and aggregates that go into
vehicle drivelines including artillery guns.
Gaganyaan on track, Isro to take final call on uncrewed
launch
The Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) is on track to
launch the uncrewed Gaganyaan mission, which is part of the space agency’s
ambitious project to send humans to space. The final call on the launch, likely
in December, will be taken following assessment of the mission once the
lockdown in Bengaluru is lifted.
Designed in three stages, the first two will witness uncrewed
launches. The Gaganyaan mission is a three-stage project which will see two
uncrewed module launches before the astronauts, who are undergoing training in
Russia, embark on the historic journey.
While the first launch is scheduled for December this year,
the second uncrewed launch is likely to take place in 2022-23 after which the
full-scale crew launch will take place.
The 10,000 crore rupees Gaganyaan Mission was first announced
by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018 and is likely to propel India in direct
competition with the US and Russia which has so far dominated human space
exploration.
