attempts are also made to present important global defense news of geopolitical importance.
User evaluation trials of India's TAPAS UAV has
started
India's Tactical Airborne Platform for Aerial
Surveillance (TAPAS), medium height long perseverance automated unmanned flying
vehicles have finished a series of flight tests and are moving towards user
evaluation trials. Eight models of the TAPAS UAV have been made up to this
point and the UAV has finished 143 Flight tests. Final design configuration
will be made in June-July. UAV is currently going through design validation
stage.
Flight user validation trials will probably
begin in October 2022. HAL has cleared that they are ready for development of five
TAPAS for trials by the. Aeronautical Development Establishment will integrate
the initial two UAVs. The next three UAVs are to be integrated by HAL. This is
to assist HAL with getting expertise in the TAPAS UAV Platform and HAL will
also be the recipient of ToT for future production of TAPAS UAVs.
IAC-1 Aircraft Carrier ready for handover,
IAC-2 will be prepared in next five years
Cochin Shipyard Limited Director recently
confirmed to the media that the INS Vikrant is set to go for the last leg of
its ocean tests & trials after which it will be formally given to the
Indian Navy by end of May. INS Vikrant will be inducted into the Indian Navy in
August around Independence Day. The last leg of tests & trials will see, touch
& Go landings on the warship, by the Mig-29K, and later take off and landings
from its deck. In the past, Mig-29K was set in the warship with the assistance
of cranes to study the deck and hangar movements onboard the warship.
Cochin Shipyard Limited which took nearly 13
years from laying foundation to the delivery of the indigenous INS Vikrant, has
said that the sister class of INS Vikrant will be ready in the next 5 years
assuming the Navy plans for IAC-2 having 45000 tons displacement capacity. Initially
Indian Navy needed IAC-2 to be of 65000 tons displacement capacity but later on
Navy downsized its necessities to just a 55000 tons Extended Vikrant Design to
save time and cost in its manufacturing, since most of the subsidizing for the
program will come from the Indian Navy, since Ministry of Defence isn't interested
in IAC-2 right now and favours SSN program.
Upgraded Aakash Prime missile successfully test fired
Another variant of the Aakash rocket was effectively tried at
the Pokhran field firing range in Jaisalmer, under the Make in India initiative
on Wednesday. The rocket test was fruitful & successful by all norms. The
new variant of the rocket fired from surface to air hit the pseudo enemy
targets. The testing of Aakash was going on since consecutive three days, with
supervision by DRDO and armed force officials.
DRDO had rolled out a few specialized improvements to the
Aakash and tried it throughout the previous three days at the Pokhran firing
range. This missile has been made particularly for the Military and IAF. New advanced
features have been added to the Aakash prime and its capabilities are being
checked in this hot weather. On Wednesday, it was fired from a truck based
vehicle and it met all parameters set before testing of the missile. Akash can
be fired from any where, be it permanent place or from a vehicle. These missiles
have been manufactured by Bharat Dynamics and by the DRDO.
HAL and BEL to manufacture IRST system for Su-30MKI in a Joint Venture

them using pin point accuracy, it will in turn enhance the superiority of
Indian Airforce.
India
to choose 6th generation engines for its future fighter jets
French Safran recently offered to develop a
125kN thrust class engine for India’s ambitious fifth generation fighter jet
AMCA, but UK also offered the co-development of new engines for AMCA after
recent visit of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Now it is up to India, whether
they want to go for French Safran Engines or UK’s Tempest Engines for its AMCA
Fighter Jet.
Rolls-Royce
& Safran are busy in developing a 6th generation engines for
FCAS & TEMPEST Fighter Jets, Next generation Engines require 120 to 145kN
thrust with an afterburner with embedded electrical starter generator, that
will maintain the power load of the 6th generation fighter jets.
If
deal is finalised & transfer of technology is done, then this engine will
not only be used in AMCA jets but it will certainly be used in Tejas MK2 jets
& Navy’s TEDBF Program in coming future.
India
to fast track its submarine torpedo launched cruise missile program
Navy is planning to drop VLS for Project-75I
& instead Navy wants to use submarine torpedo launched cruise missiles with
1500 kilometers range which can later on be used in Kalvari class submarines
too, Navy has decide to go for Submarine Torpedo Cruise Missiles instead of VLS
because right now there is not enough Brahmos Missiles with 450+ kilometers
range, most of them are under development specially 800+ & 1500 kms range
hypersonic Brahmos Missiles.
Submarine
torpedo launched missiles will come in two variants: Anti Ship Variant STLCM with
autonomous terminal guidance Radio Frequency seeker and 2nd being Land Attack STLCM with Electro Optical seeker
with a sea skimming for avoiding detection by enemy radars and sensors.
Drdo
will soon start testing of the ejection module of the SLCM, Navy along with DRDO
will use Kalvari Submarines for initial tests, SLCM are used to eject missiles
& help submarines in getting edge over enemy by remaining out of its range
& detection.
Rudram-III
: Is it an Air launched ballistic missile or Hypersonic missile?
Few
weeks ago, schematic diagram of Rudram-III was made public, after which there
were huge speculations on whether Rudram-III is a Ballistic Missile or it is
actually a Hypersonic Missile, Hypersonic missiles travels at Mach 5 speed but
Rudram-III can’t be termed as Hypersonic Missile even though it can attain a
hypersonic speed as well.
Rudram-III
has a Quasi-Ballistic flight which help it in achieving hypersonic speed and in
turn helps the missile getting undetected by enemy radars, After the launch of
the Rudram-III Missile, its single stage booster speeds up its velocity even
more & second stage dual pulse motor helps missile in achieving low
hypersonic velocity in final terminal stage of the missile.
Rudram-III
if launched from Air such as from Fighter jets such as Sukhoi-30MKI makes it
more unpredictable & undetectable than if it is launched from ground
platforms, still it can’t be classified as Hypersonic Missiles of the category
that many countries of the world are currently testing their hypersonic weapons.
Boeing plans to fly Two Super Hornet aircraft to India
Boeing is planning to fly two F/A-18E fighter jets for an

that will definitely meet with the requirements of the Indian Navy.
STOBAR is used for the take off and recovery of fighter jets
from the deck of an aircraft carrier. Boeing is also in talks with Indian
Defence department for sale of its P8I, F-15EX, KC-46 tanker used for aerial
refuelling that will boost India’s defence capabilities.
Why ISRO’s RLV-TD landing experiment is important for future space
exploration & travel?
ISRO will begin an important phase for its reusable launch
vehicle test at the end April, this month that will set the stage for India’s
space exploration in future. DRDO is planning to test its RLV-TD Test Vehicle
from Chitradurga’s AirStrip situated in Bengaluru, Purpose of the test is to
check the landing capabilities of the Reusable Landing Vehicle.
The RLV-TD vehicle will be launched from a helicopter at an
altitude of 2.3 to 2.4km, from where the Reusable vehicle will travel its journey
to the landing strip. The RLV-TD vehicle will travel like any normal Aircraft on
the landing Airstrip on its rear wheels, parachute integrated in the vehicle
will control the velocity of the vehicle and make it stable.
Reusable Vehicle will bring down the cost of launches done by
ISRO, ISRO is planning to use the vehicle atleast 15 times which isn’t possible
in any of the current ISRO Launch Vehicle. It will eventually cut down the cost
of space experiments and exploration which will in turn benefit mankind.
IAF seeks hand held Anti Drone Guns, as threat of enemy
drones grows
IAF has pitched for hand held Anti Drone Guns amid growing
threat posed by enemy UAVs, requirements put forward by IAF are : Drone Guns
must be easy to use, portable, easily operated by single soldier or person
without any training or any specific skills required by Anti Drone Guns, Range
greater than 300 metre, Guns must be able to shoot down drones. On April 22, Rajnath
Singh on 6th edition of Defence India Startup Challenge calls upon
Industry to develop such guns which will boost India’s Make In India
Initiative.
Drones Guns are meant to destroy any low flying enemy drones
and unmanned UAVs that are used by enemy countries for smuggling and terror
activities in Indian Border areas as we have experienced last year in Punjab’s
Pathankot
Unmanned AMCA In Future: AMCA to get Auto Pilot and an
Electronic Pilot System
An Avionics engineer for the AMCA program has recently
confirmed that AMCA will be getting an Auto Pilot feature that will be used to
fly AMCA with minimal Pilot Intervention, that will eventually be used to make
AMCA pilotless in future, that is Unmanned AMCA, AMCA will also feature an Electronic
Pilot, a mission pilot system which will instruct pilot while flying AMCA.
Mission Pilot or an Electronic Pilot feature will help actual
pilot in the identifying and managing & understanding situation around him,
Mission pilot will help pilot in making choices during better choices in any
tough mission.
Electronic pilot will help AMCA’s pilot for striking deep in
the Enemies Territory, there will be no need of ground support in such an
aircraft, AMCA Mk2 will have many advanced capabilities like Automated take off
and landing, automated air refuelling, & Artificial Piloting features from remote
area away from fighter Jet.
AMCA Fighter Jets may get
EOTS like Sensor System India is developing
Instruments Research & Development Establishment, a DRDO
lab that specializes in the development of Vision and Electro optical fire
control systems has issued tenders for fabrication and installation of the InfraRed
Sensor for airborne applications. Instruments Research & Development
Establishment seems to be testing India’s own Electro Optical Targeting System (EOTS)
that combines forward looking infrared and infrared search and track
functionality for the precision air to air and air to surface targeting
capability.
Aeronautical Development Agency had confirmed that it is
working on a sensor package that they won’t call is similar to the (EOTS) that
was seen for the first time on the F-35 program but something on the similar
lines for AMCA Fighter Jets. It has one forward looking infrared sensor and one rear looking infrared
sensor positioned in such a way that it can provide high resolution imagery of
the terrain and can also offer spot tracking at greatly increased standoff
ranges for AMCA.

Indian Navy successfully test fires BrahMos cruise missile
from INS Chennai
The Indian Navy successfully demonstrated the accuracy of an
extended range land attack Brahmos supersonic cruise missile from the stealth
destroyer INS Chennai on Saturday, said the Indian Navy officials. The missile
hit its intended target with pinpoint accuracy after traversing an extended
range trajectory and performing complex manoeuvres.
Both Brahmos missile and INS Chennai are indigenously built
and highlight the cutting edge of Indian missile and ship building prowess.
They reinforce the Indian Navy’s contribution towards the Atma Nirbhar Bharat
and Make in India endeavours. This achievement established the Indian Navy’s
ability to strike even deeper and influence land operations further away from
the sea when and where required.
New Cruise Missile Confirmed For Chinas J-10C Fighter: An
Anti-Ship Weapon to Boost Export Prospects?
The J-10C is one of three fighter classes in production today
for the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Air Force. Entering service from 2018,
over 150 J-10C fighters are currently thought to be in service with the
airframes being produced at a faster rate than any other Chinese design. As a
light weight single engine design, the fighter’s operational costs are
considerably lower than those of other fighters in the country.
On March 3 it was confirmed that the J-10C had integrated the
YJ-83K anti ship cruise missile, when an image of a fighter carrying one of the
missiles was released. The J-10C was previously prized for its access to PL-15
AESA radar guided air to air missiles, widely considered the most capable in
the world, with estimated ranges of 200 to 300 kilometers, as well as YJ-91
cruise missiles for anti shipping and anti radiation missions.
The YJ-83K complements these capabilities by providing a
longer range anti shipping capability, albeit subsonically, with the latest
variants benefitting from ranges exceeding 200 kilometer and capable of
receiving mid-course corrections by remote link.
India’s first indigenous flying trainer ‘HANSA-NG’ designed
and developed by CSIR National Aerospace Laboratories, has successfully
completed the sea level trials at Puducherry from February 19 to March 5. The
aircraft was flown to Puducherry covering a distance of 140 nautical miles in
1.5 hours at a cruising speed of 155 kilometer per hour on February 19.
The objective of these trials were to evaluate handling
qualities, climb, cruise performance, balked landing, structural performance
including positive and negative G, power plant and other systems performance at
sea level. All the objectives of the sea level trials were met and the aircraft
was ferried back to Bengaluru on March 5, after completing 18 hours flying in
Puducherry. It is designed to meet the Indian flying club needs and it is an
ideal aircraft for Commercial Pilot Licensing due to its low cost and low fuel
consumption.
Coast Guard’s Dornier-228 suffers hard landing after engine
failure
An undated video is going viral in the Twitter space of an
Indian Coast Guard Dornier-228 coming in for landing at the Hall’s facility in
Chakeri in Kanpur after suffering a left engine failure. Aircraft is believed
to be coming in from Chennai to Hall’s Kanpur facility where Dornier-228 is
manufactured and where it also has a Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul facility
for the aircraft type.
In the video, it can be seen that the pilot after landing the
aircraft on the landing strip tried hard to keep the aircraft straight but due
to pulling force coming from its right engine, he veered into the soft ground
before hitting a structure. While the Indian Coast Guard is yet to officially
comment on the incident it seems the aircraft is safe due to quick thinking of
the pilot and might have suffered minor damages to its front section.

in western Assam. CCTV surveillance system would monitor and control all
activities along the frontier and to further enhance round the clock vigilance
to control diverse border crimes.
BSF officials said that keeping in view of the vulnerability
of the border, and heightened activities of smugglers & anti-national
elements, the CCTV surveillance system would facilitate them to closely watch
the area during day and night to curb smuggling and border crimes. India and
Bangladesh share 4,096 kilometers of border, BSF has also installed various
other smart surveillance systems to further enhance vigil, especially in
smuggling, crime and infiltration prone areas.

Kilo and Kalvari class to get next generation Lithium Ion
batteries soon
In 2020, a Request for Information of the Indian Navy for the
development of a ‘high capacity’ lithium ion battery system to be retrofitted
on an existing in service submarine was initiated for Indian vendors to replace
older lead acid batteries for underwater propulsion.
Navy has now selected the vendor and after proof of concept
and the technology has now given go ahead for the development of compact
lithium ion battery pack that will be replacing older lead acid batteries that
will be first equipped on a Russian supplied Kilo class submarines for user
trials purposes and if found satisfactory will be later adapted on the other
Kilo class submarines and later also on the Kalvari class submarines.
Lithium ion batteries are lighter than lead acid batteries
and also generate less heat due to which underwater endurance of the submarines
will be three time more than the existing 48-72 hour endurance which are
provided by the lead acid batteries. Lithium ion batteries can also provide
large output on demand, allowing the boat to dash mush faster while dived and
don’t require regular maintenance or water top ups.

features in the country. Headquartered in Hyderabad, Magnum Wings, a technology
driven aeronautical and aviation company, is set to demonstrate its first
product called ‘MW Viper’ before potential clients from various sectors
including Defence, within a week.
Currently, Magnum is building UAVs with a payload of up to 20
kilograms and a maximum take off weight of 50 kilograms. They can fly at 100 to
200 kilometer per hour for three hours. Magnum is trying to enhance the drones
capacities. This UAV can be used by the defence sector for surveillance, forest
departments to control forest fires. UAVs can reach higher altitudes, fly
faster and carry a lot of weight. It can be a good replacement for a helicopter
when used for surveillance.
Why India should start work on Gas Turbine Propulsions?
Russian Ukraine War will have larger consensuses on the
Indian defense sector and the Indian Navy which operates at least 150 ships and
vessels that are powered by gas turbine engines that are supplied by the
Ukrainian company Zorya Mashproekt might face the brunt of the issues, in the
next few weeks and months due to disturbed supply of critical spares and other
components from Ukraine due to ongoing war.
DRDO has used the core of the Kaveri engine to develop a
Kaveri Marine Gas Turbine that can generate a modest 12 Mega Watt of propulsion
power and can be used to power small warships in a class of 2000 to 2500 tons.
According to the Indian Navy, it had requirements of 30 to 40 Kaveri Marine Gas
Turbine but in trials, it failed to maintain desired power requirements for
long durations, and also was not able to meet requirements of greater
endurance.

Unlike jet engines that need to be replaced after 3000 to 4000
hours of flight time, Marine Gas Turbines usually have a life span of 30000
hours before its due for engine replacement in any major warships. Indian Navy
also needed 42 Gas Turbine generators. These are de-rated versions of the
marine Kaveri, which will be used for generating electrical power on warships
but that too has not materialized yet.
GTRE has plans to develop a Marine Gas Turbine engine based
on the 125 kilo Newton jet engine that it plans to develop with France but it
won’t be ready for commercial use at least for 15 to 20 years. Off late India
did diversify and equipped many frontline warships with American ‘General
Electric LM-2500’ on indigenously designed warships, but when it comes to
Russian designed warships it still needs to rely on the Ukrainian engines which
in future might be replaced by the Russian developed ones but with military
sanctions likely to remain in place on Russia for few years that too might be
difficult for India.
Navy takes deliveries of Israeli SMASH 2000 Plus system
The Indian Navy has taken deliveries of unspecified number of
Israeli SMASH 2000 Plus system that it had ordered to be used as a close in
anti-drone system to protect installations and assets. Smart Shooters SMASH
2000 Plus fire control systems, which will be installed mainly on AK-47 and AK-203
rifles.
SMASH is a kind of electro optical sight system. SMASH 2000
Plus is first hard kill solution against the growing threats of drones and has
proven ability to hit any ground or airborne targets and eliminate the threat
quickly and effectively. Smart Shooter claims the SMASH 2000 Plus features,
built in targeting algorithms that can track and hit very small drones skimming
along at high speed, at ranges of up to 120 metres, with the first shot.
Israeli SMASH 2000 Plus system also has been offered to the Punjab State Police
and BSF.
Will the Indo French 125 kilo
Newton engine will find its way into the Sukhoi-30MKI fighter jets?
It seems India and France have decided to go for the
development of a 125 kilo Newton Thrust class engine instead of 110 kilo Newton.
India seems to kill two birds with one stone and compensate for the drop in
thrust range of 10 to 15% that every turbo fan engine faces in Indian dry humid
conditions. While there remains some confusion if the Indo French engine will
be 110 kilo Newton class or 125 class but what is clear is that, DRDO already
had plans to develop a 125 kilo Newton uprated engine based on the 110 kilo Newton
for the future project that is still not clear off.
Not so long ago, DRDO and GTRE had proposed the development
of an uprated engine, that will replace the AL-31FP, 122.6 kilo Newton engines,
that are used to power the Sukhoi 30MKI fleet. IAF wants to upgrade 150 Sukhoi 30
Fighter Jets as part of its MLU modernization package but the Russians opposed
any such moves by India and instead offered its AL-41F1S, 142 kilo Newton as
part of the “Super Sukhoi ” upgrade package that is also been implemented on
the Russian Sukhoi-30SM fleet to maintain commonality with the Sukhoi-35 fleet.
Indo French companies are confident that a workable 125 kilo Newton
engine will be ready for flight tests in less than 7 years and ready to enter
production in the 9th year since the time of signing of the contract between
both countries, that is likely to take place sometime later this year, as
negotiations are in the final rounds. DRDO has confirmed that a new engine will
also be used on TEDBF and Tejas Mk2 program, if it is indeed 125 kilo Newton
engine, AMCA with 25 tons All up weight will have thrust to weight ratio of 1,
which is unseen in any 25 tons aircraft but it also emphases that this new
engine will be built around to work much better in Indian conditions and the
same engine in un dusty and cooler conditions will act like a 143 kilo Newton
engine.
125 kilo Newton engine makes sense, if AMCA Mk2 or Mk3 that
is planned to be over 25 tons All Up Weight and somewhere close to 28 to 30 tons
in All Up Weight and additional engine thrust has been calculated, keeping in
mind the future increase in capabilities and All Up Weight. It is also possible
that DRDO & IAF agreed to use, a 125 kilo Newton engine, as a common type
engine for all its future fleet that includes upgraded Sukhoi-30MKI, AMCA Mk2,
Tejas Mk2, and TEDBF for Navy, so to make the whole project viable and
profitable to the companies that will be involved in the program and also meet the
minimum unit requirements.
What is still not clear is if the 125 kilo Newton engine will
be based on the old M88-4 Eco concepts that could have bumped up the present
wet thrust of the baseline M88 engine from 75 kilo Newton to 122 to 130 kilo Newton,
or, it will be an entirely new engine, since reduced radar signature, improved
heat management, and climatization to Indian conditions are some of the
requirements that India won’t compromise on and with all certainty, it will be
hybrid of old and new technology.
