DRDO to develop Desi Barak Extended Range Air Defence
Interceptor missile
Drdo has finalized the development of Desi variant of Medium
Range Surface to Air Missile (Extended Range) surface to air interceptor that
will incorporate a 150 kilometers range to complement the XRSAM (Extra long
Range Surface to Air Missile) that will have a range of 350 kilometers.
Desi Barak-ER like XRSAM will be a vertical launch, all weather,
advanced active radar guided, 50G manoeuvring interceptor capable of 360°
intercepts at altitudes up to 30 kilometers. Both Interceptor missiles will be
powered by a solid fuel dual pulse rocket motor, that already has been
developed for the Indo Israeli MRSAM Interceptor missile but with an additional
solid propellant booster it can achieve the 150 kilometers intercept range.
New Desi Barak-ER will be effectively identical to the MRSAM
but will replace all Israeli components with the indigenous systems. Both New
Interceptor missiles will be part of the new long range air defense system that
DRDO is working on and will be similar to the S400 class that India has
recently acquired from Russia that comes with Two missiles, 40N6E, a 400 kilometer
range and 48N6 with a 250 kilometer range as part of the missiles system.

Bharat Dynamics signs contract with Indian Army for supply of
Konkurs Anti Tank Missiles
Bharat Dynamics Limited and the Indian Army have signed a
contract worth Rs 3,131.82 crore for the manufacture and supply of Konkurs-M
anti tank guided missiles. The contract which was signed in New Delhi today
will be executed in three years.
The order book position of Bharat Dynamics Limited stands at
Rs 11,400 crore net including the Konkurs-M contract. The missile has been
indigenised up to the maximum extent. BDL is also offering Konkurs-M missiles
for export to friendly foreign countries. Bharat Dynamics has augmented its
manufacturing capacity to meet the domestic as well as overseas demand for
Konkurs-M.
As a part of its global outreach, BDL is also offering Man Portable
Anti Tank Guided Missiles, Nag, Milan-2T, and Amogha, in addition to Konkurs-M
for export. Konkurs-M is a second generation, mechanised infantry anti tank
guided missile, to destroy armoured vehicles equipped with explosive reactive
armour. The missile can be launched either from the BMP-II tank or from a
ground launcher. It has a range between 75 to 4000 metres.
Indian Coast Guard inducts two ALH-MK3 helicopters, to be
stationed at Kochi
Indian Coast Guard on Wednesday inducted two Dhruv advanced
light helicopters Mark-III made by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. The choppers
armed with modern avionics and systems enhancing capabilities will be based at
845 Squadron, Kochi.
These are 9th and 10th ALH in the series of 16 ALH which are
being inducted in Indian Coast Guard. Equipped with surveillance radar, electro
optical pod, medical intensive care unit, high intensity searchlight and
machine gun, the helicopters can perform other key roles.
The indigenously designed and developed Advanced Light
Helicopter (ALH Dhruv) is a twin engine, multi role, multi mission new
generation helicopter in the 5.5 tons weight class. The major variants of Dhruv
are classified as Dhruv Mk1, Mk2, Mk3 and Mk4. More than 335 ALH helicopters
have been produced to date, logging around 3,40,000 cumulative flying hours.
After ‘Manik’ STFE, GTRE working on a Small Turbojet engine
GTRE also recently revealed that is also working to develop a
small turbojet engine of 1kN thrust class that can be used for unmanned aerial
vehicles (UAVs), target drones, light sport aircraft, and gliders with an
additional engine.
According to GTRE components have been developed for internal
evaluation and based on the reviews a version-2 was later designed with major
improvements. GTRE also is working on developing a small turbojet engine of
2.7kN thrust class for which detailed design of the engine is completed and
soon work on the prototype engine will start. this 2.7kN thrust class turbojet
engine will be used on an air-launched air to surface missile system that is
under development.
GTRE is also working to develop a new afterburner section
with variable area nozzle and TVC technology for the Dry Kaveri engine for
which limited trials have been conducted. The ‘Manik’ STFE is a bypass turbofan
engine of 4.4kN thrust class designed and developed by the GTRE for the ITCM
program that will eventually find its way into the LRLACM (Long-Range Land
Attack Cruise Missile) program that is under development. STFE engine performed
well during the short-range test, that was conducted last august and plans are
to make further advancements to make it more powerful and faster.

TATA-DRDO WhAP conducts successful Trials at Ladakh
In the last few weeks, the Indian Army has been operating on
full throttle to deploy its most proficient equipment at Ladakh to prepare for
any encounter against the Chinese People Liberation Army. Eight wheeled
armoured personnel carrier for infantry troops that are designed and made in
India are undergoing trials at Leh.
The vehicles will undergo high altitude winter trials and
could be efficient at transporting the troops and aiding them to occupy
strategic heights too. Moreover, the carriers will also undergo tests at
Depsang to assess the engine and functioning systems of the artillery.
Here’s the first glimpse of the eight wheeled armoured
personnel carrier for infantry troops at the Leh airfield. A successful
examination of these newly stationed carriers could cause a tremendous
advancement in India’s infantry combat vehicles operation. These are wheeled
equipment that tend to be much quicker, swifter, amphibious, and can be airlifted
in numbers at several vital points across the Line of Actual Control.
Developed jointly by India’s DRDO and private industrial giant
TATA, the Kestrel is an 8 wheeled Amphibious Armoured Personnel Carrier,
capable of attaining speeds of 100 km/hr on road and 10 km/hr in water. Being
an amphibious vehicle, the Kestrel gives a significant advantage to the troops
– not halting for bridges to be laid down by engineers when encountered with a
small river or similar hydrological formations.
The new Armoured Personal Vehicle shall replace the BMP-1 and BMP-2/2Ks vehicles in Indian service,
which too are amphibious. These vehicles could be posted at the Pangong Tso
lake, Chumar and Daulat Beg Oldi to strengthen the armed forces. Furthermore,
it is designed by the DRDO, stressing on the steps being taken by the
government to become self-reliant in the defence sector.
5th Scorpene submarine, Vagir begins maiden sea trials
In a significant development, India’s fifth Scorpene
submarine Vagir commenced its first sea sortie from Mumbai on February 1. It
was expected to go for maiden surface sortie in December last year. The fifth
submarine of Project 75, which began in November 2020 at Mazagon Dock
Shipbuilders Limited, will be commissioned into the Indian Navy later this
year.
The commencement of sea trials of the fifth submarine is a
significant milestone. During her sea sortie, the submarine will undergo
intense trials of all its systems at sea, including propulsion systems, weapons
and sensors.
INS Vagir is under development stage. Scorpene class
submarines are a key asset for the Navy as they can undertake anti-surface as
well as anti-submarine warfare missions. These submarines are capable of
launching different kinds of torpedoes and missile systems. They are also
equipped with a range of surveillance and intelligence gathering mechanisms.
India Tests BrahMos, Uran Anti-Ship Missiles In Andaman And
Nicobar Islands
India has successfully tested two anti-ship missiles, BrahMos
and Uran, in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The missiles were test fired by
the Andaman and Nicobar Command, a tri-service theatre command of the Indian
Armed Forces. While the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile was fired from a
ground based launcher on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Uran anti-ship
missile was launched from a Guided Missile Corvette of the Indian Navy. The Andaman
and Nicobar Command said that Ex-Naval ship LCU-38 served as the target for the
test. Ship Launched and Land based Anti-ship missile fired from Indian Navy’s
Guided Missile Corvette hit the target at maximum range with devastating impact.
France hands over 3 Rafale fighter jets with India-specific
enhancements to IAF
The Indian Air Force (IAF) on Tuesday received three of the
last four Rafale fighter jets. The fighter planes were handed over by France at
Istres-Le Tube air base of Rafale manufacturer Dassault Aviation, and is
situated north-west of Marseille. After this, the IAF will wait for the right
opportunity to take the fighter jets to India between February 15 and 20.
According to people aware of the developments, the handed
over planes will now be test-checked for all the details. The fighter jets are
expected to arrive in India between February 15 and 16, the people cited above
said. When they fly out of France, these fighter jets will receive mid-air refuelling
by the air force of India’s close ally, the United Arab Emirates, using Airbus
multi-role transport tankers.
These Rafale fighter jets are fully equipped with India
specific enhancements, which will give them extra teeth to fight any regional
adversary. The last fighter jet is nearly ready with fresh paint and
enhancements, but will arrive in April due to the reasons best known to IAF.

airframe, structure, pipelines, electric circuits, and subsystems. The switch to domestically made WS-10 engines from imported
ones has made mass production possible.

After Boeing betrayal, DRDO to built its own High Altitude
Engine Test Facility
Boeing was to establish a High Altitude Engine Test Facility
as well as a Trisonic Wind Tunnel Facility at India’s DRDO as part of its
offset obligation for the ten C-17 Globemaster 3 heavy lift aircraft. The
projects were High Altitude Engine Test Facility for $315 million and Trisonic
Wind Tunnel worth $195 million, US government is yet to grant an export license
due to which Boeing failed to meet offset obligations which now DRDO has cancelled.
Boeing knew that technologies required export license from US
Government at the time of submission of the offset proposal and kept DRDO and
the Indian government in the dark.
DRDO now has decided to build both High Altitude Engine Test
Facility and Trisonic Wind Tunnel Facilities for testing engine with 130 kilo
newton class of thrust using local expertise from private sector companies and
has cancelled Boeing’s proposals. DRDO says that the facility will be ready in
3-4 years.
Aircraft Carriers For Indian Navy ‘Unavoidable Requirement’
To Meet Any Eventuality
Even as India’s first Indigenous Aircraft Carrier — an
engineering marvel that reflects the technological prowess of a resurgent
nation — completed its third set of sea trials in January this year, several navies
around the globe are looking to either acquire these powerful platforms or
upgrade their existing carrier aviation capabilities.
Given the evidently uncertain and unpredictable nature of
challenges to India’s maritime security, the parliamentary standing committee
has only reaffirmed what the Navy’s top brass, professionals in the field and
security experts have been pointing out – that aircraft carriers are
inalienable from India’s maritime security. The Committee has itself noted that
India’s vast coastline, expansive maritime zones and distant island territories
require at least one operational carrier on each seaboard.
The Committee has thus envisaged a “standard scenario” in
which two aircraft carriers are deployed at all times “while one would undergo
repairs and maintenance”. Secondly, aircraft carriers can project the nation’s
military might far beyond its shores thus offering the first line of defence
against any threat at or from the sea.
HAL to start work on Amphibious Dornier-228 aircraft
State run aerospace giant Hindustan Aeronautics Limited
management has allowed Transport Aircraft Division, Kanpur, HAL to develop a
Dornier-228 seaplane based on the Dornier 228 aircraft for Indian defense
forces and European markets.
Transport Aircraft Division already has developed floats for
the program that has been tested intensively to replace its traditional landing
gear system for taking off and landings at the sea.
Conversion of Dornier 228 aircraft into seaplane was first
proposed at Aero India 2021 as HAL believes there exists a small market for
both civilian and military usage of such seaplanes. Civil aviation and
waterways ministries plan to develop 14 water aerodromes by the end of 2024.
Government has plans to develop at least 28 routes that have been awarded so
far under the UDAN scheme.
As India
drops P8I Aircraft, Pakistan Navy started using P8I as Sea Sultan
P8I was
deployed during the 2017 Doklam standoff although it’s a naval aircraft, such
are the advantages of these aircraft that our neighbor Pakistan has started to
acquire these kinds of aircraft. Pakistan has started acquiring Embraer lineage
1000 aircraft named ‘Sea Sultan’ to replace its Lockheed P3 Orion and to serve
the same purpose as Boeing P8I.
The
acquisition is aligned with Pakistan Navy’s modernization plan and would serve
the intention of maintaining the balance with the Indian Navy. The induction of
the Sea sultan will definitely enhance the Pakistan navy’s maritime
surveillance capabilities. But what is interesting is the makeshift
arrangements (“Jugaad”) that were done to acquire these aircraft.
Sea sultan is
converted from Embraer lineage 1000 civilian aircraft. Italy’s Leonardo will
support to equip the aircraft with anti-submarine systems and South Africa’s
Paramount Group will support the conversion from the airliner.

Times Speculates That J-20 Fighter Could Operate With Unmanned Drones
The Global
Times suggested that the J-20 could fly with unmanned systems, similar to the US
Air Force Loyal Wingman program. China may be mirroring the US Air Forces Loyal
Wingman program. The Air Force program is intended to enable manned jets to
operate with semi-autonomous drones.
People’s
Liberation Army Air Force is experimenting with manned & unmanned teaming
with its J-20 fifth generation stealth fighter jet.
The Air Force
Airpower Teaming System and the Loyal Wingman aircraft enables manned fighters
to be linked to unmanned drones. Incoming information from the unmanned
systems, such as video, still photos, or electronic warfare information, can be
collected and organized by onboard computer processing, greatly improving operational
efficiency and multiplying mission options.
The Global
Times suggested that the loyal wingman concept could prove useful in its new
twin seat J-20 as a second crew member could operate the drones while a pilot
flew the aircraft.
Combat data
from the second seat could be gathered, analyzed and used to train artificial intelligence,
which could eventually replace the second pilot.
F-35C in

On January
24th after a landing mishap on the US Navy aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson, a
new F-35C Lightning Too stealth fighter was lost into the South China Sea
during routine operations in the area. This marked the third loss of an F-35 at
sea with a British F-35B having crashed in the Mediterranean shortly after
launch in November.
The vastness
of the South China Sea, and the large presence of the Chinese People's
Liberation Army in the region, has raised the possibility that the F-35 could
fall into Chinese hands should it not be recovered or destroyed quickly by US
forces.
This would be
a particularly significant blow to the US and its clients considering the size
of the F-35 program and the likely very significant benefits which China and
its defence partners could gain from studying the airframe.
Race heats up
for Indian naval fighter deal, US says it meets all tech criteria
The race to
supply new aircraft carrier born fighter jets to the Indian Navy is heating up,
with the US offering set to follow the French Rafale-M in an operational
demonstration in Goa in March and its manufacturers saying that all technical
requirements will be met.
The
competition to initially supply 26 jets (18 single seaters and eight twin seat
trainers) to the Indian Navy is being processed under a government to government
mode, with requests for an operational demonstration sent to the US and French
embassies.
The French
Rafale-M has already conducted a series of trials at the Shore Based Test
Facility in Goa and the US F/A 18 Super Hornet will follow suit, with its
developers saying that all issues with the aircraft, including the ability to
lower it into the deck hangar of the Indian aircraft carrier have been
resolved.
Boeing has
developed a capability specifically for the F/A-18 Super Hornet that will allow
for the faster movement of the aircraft between the flight deck and Hangar
without having to remove or modify any part of the aircraft.
